Help with Repair

Hello All, I am new so sorry if I am posting this wrong or I have not looked for answers in the right place so bear with me....

I have inherited a Stainless Oyster Perpetual date just ( probably from the 70's) it does not work ( no movement) in the US. I now live in Seoul South Korea and I am looking for a place to have it serviced and working again. I am hoping not to send it back to Rolex, but looking for a good repair person who can do it locally. - best -

Try to do some search in your local area. Some former Rolex technician or watchmaker maybe there especially in large city like Seoul.
Since it's over 30 yr, Rolex may or may not service it. Get a quote since it may cost more than the watch's worth if you don't have a movement.

Thanks for the replies, I have tried to do an online search of Locals but my Hangol is not too good...as far as cost to repair anyone know? When I move it back and forth I can hear wind and tick inside, it just does not move. Should I try to send it out? Thanks again!

Have you tried to uncrew the crown and give it a manual wind or pull the crown out see if you can move the hands.

Sounds like a broken mainspring...

Almost any decent watchmaker should be able to replace it, but go to a large Dealership....Tlhey may have a contact for you..

Yes, I can move the hands and I can wind it, but the movement does not start.

Thanks for the replies, one question is what would the rough value be of a working watch in similar age and type, (ie is it worth the cost of fixing) and secondly any help in finding a place in Seoul? This place is crazy huge. - Best -

UPDATE - I pulled the bracelet off and found the serial # and it dates it to 1981, so will it be hard to get it working again? (ie parts?) also I saw some similar looking watches from the same year priced at 1500$ to 2000$ - Is it worth putting the money into the watch? Thanks again

That problem sound like what Larry said.
I do know a good local watch maker in LA area if you don't mind send it to US.
1981 is not that old and most Rolex service center will fix that.
Rolex at San Francisco services vintage watches. The quote for repair is free but you'll need to pay for the shipping charges.

If you're going to send it, why not send it to RSC Geneva?

Still plenty of parts available for the 15XX series movement,could be just a very simple service and clean or as Larry said a mainspring.Myself would take it to a local watchmaker let him have a look at it first.

Somehow I doubt that you will find someone that will have a movement to fit your watch with.
In the 70's the Italians will take the movement out of a relatively inexpensive Rolex and will place it in an 18k "Italian" made case and bracelet president.
As Rolex is charging 10 times the amount of gold, the Italians had created a nice little illegal industry at only twice the gold price for brand new. Anyone back then that had any doubts about the authenticity of their gold watch, would take it to a watchmaker, he would open it...and presto...a REAL rolex movement in there...then he would pass the 18 karat Italian made president as genuine. So for many years now we discover many newish rolex date cases and bracelets without a movement for both gents and ladies watches.

I live in Seoul as well (Dutch/Korean), actually there is a watchmaker who lived in the US for a while, although hardly speak English, and is a Master Watch Maker. Visit his website at http://www.timeseoul.com, its a really small shop, but don't let it fool you, this guy knows what he is doing. He also has a watch museum in Gangnam, never been there, but that area is the more posh neighborhood of Seoul.

FYI: I also have a Date and have seen quite a few on sale in that area (many jewelry stores there), so worst case scenario buy one there and you'll have all the parts you need.

Edit: its near Jeongno 3-ga, get of the subway there, not sure which exit, but walk towards Jeongno 4-ga, follow the traffic signs, and stay on the right side of the street, walk for a good 10 minutes until you come across a big intersection (this is Jeongno 4-ga), but don't cross the shop is located there on the corner, very very small tho and has a sign on top 'TimeSeoul'.
