Vintage GMT-Master 1675
I have recently inherited my grandfathers GMT, it was worn and loved every day. He was the original owner and it is all original. However it is in need of restoration. I would love to here from the experts as to what I should focus on and a possibly est value after restoration. Serial # puts it at a 1972.
A list of things I am planning depending on any good feedback. New crystal Full service/ adjustment pressure test Replace any movement parts as necessary Replace bezel insert Light polish on oyster and bracelet Please see pics. Sorry for the pic quality |

I would get it serviced and repaired as necessary, at somewhere other than a Rolex Service Center and perhaps replace the crystal, but that would be it. A old GMT like that has earned all its nicks and scratches and should wear them proudly. OMMV
These people would help you deiced what should be done. They are highly regarded in vintage restoration. http://www.watchmakers.com/ |

Out of curiosity, why would you recommend against a Rolex service center?

Great watch.
All you need is a new crystal (part number 25-116 or 116) and a service by a certified rolex watchmaker. IMO, I wouldn't use the Rolex Service Center (RSC). A bezel insert like that will cost you about $500. Unfortunately, vntage parts are not cheap. |

As far as the Rolex service center, is it just because they are more expensive?
What if I bring in my own parts? I.e. Crystal and insert? Thanks again |

I agree. Don't go with RSC for service on vintage pieces. Do the movement service, crystal and gaskets and crown/tube if needed but don't have it polished. The scars add to the history and character. Your grandfather put every one of them there with pride

I have no problem with the cost of a RSC service. You end up with a full Rolex 2 year warranty afterwards but for vintage watches you run the risk of "updating" the dial and hands and losing the value of the original parts.

dont take it to RSC, youll lose all the character your grandfather put on that. Maybe LAWW or Rik in Florida?

Has anyone else tried the Watch Buyer's Group in Pasadena CA. They're about 1/2 the price of an RSC and, with my Datejust, they made recommendations, but did exactly what I wanted and no more. They asked, for example, if I wanted to replace a bit of lume that had fallen off of the minute hand (I did) and only polished if I said so.

I have talked to the watch director and certified Rolex watchmaker at Hyde Park in Denver. He is a really great guy with a passion for vintage pieces. He won't to anything to it that we haven't previously agreed upon because he is sensitive to the vintage character and uniqueness. So I think I feel comfortable with him doing the work.
