It's a very elegant watch. But also a bit too simple for me. I will prefer the 5296 sector dial.

Can someone elaborate on this ? Not sure I understand the comment "date is in the wrong place." As opposed to where exactly ? The date window looks appropriately placed as far as I can tell.

The date is slightly left of where it was on models where the movement was designed to fit the case. For example, the AP 15400 has the movement designed for the 15300 case, and thus the date window is further left on the dial. ALS for example makes a new movement to fit each case size, which is costly but admirable.

So the movement was designed to fit a 38mm case but not 39mm 5227 case ?? I have a 5167 which has the same movement in a 40mm case and the date is fine. Still not following the logic here.

So true, that's half mm every direction.
Proper dial design does not depend entirely on movement size.

i bought the R model from a grey dealer for a 10 K discount. actually, it is a very very cool piece in my view, which covers the whole range from very dressy to very sporty. however, as pointed out here repeatedly, it is much too expensive for what it is. no idea how TS justifies the price tag....

It wears bigger than 39 mm. An interesting thing to do is to handle and try on a 5227 and a 5327 at the same time. The cases are almost identical except for the back, yet the 5327 looks just perfect, and the 5227 looks large with plenty of empty real estate in the lower half of the dial. Personally, I'd go for the 5227 if it was 37 mm, but I think that it just looks a bit vacuous at 39 mm. I love everything else about the 5227 expect the price, but I could even find myself willing to pay the price if only it were just a little bit smaller (which would permit the date window to be on the outside track in lieu of that tiny baton, as is the case in my 5711) or perhaps if it had small seconds or a moon phase in the bottom half of the dial.

Paying a little bit extra to get a calendar is tempting, but the 5205 is more than just a little bit extra. The calendar to consider would be the 5146. If you're considering a 5205, you should also be considering the 5396 and the 5237, which I consider to be better choices, though its a matter of taste.

(Another interesting thing to do is to put the 5227R,J, and G all next to each other. The dial is, in fact, exactly the same colour, but it looks significantly different depending on the colour of the surrounding metal.)

When shopping a WG dress watch, I tried it. In the end, could not justify dropping double the price of a WG ALS Sax thin.
