Is the warranty worth 3k?

Saw a 2018 BNIB with all paperwork DD40 listed for $26,500 via a chrono24 Trusted Seller. However, the card was never swiped, so no Rolex warranty included (this is what I consider the true grey market).

I know Trusted Sellers via Rolex Forums generally sell them for around $29k BNIB, with the Rolex warranty generally still in tact.

My question - is the extra $2500-3000 worth a warranty to you?

Probably not, but if I'm spending that kind of money, I'd probably opt for the whole package.

Agreed, it is not worth it.

I would not buy a new watch without the warranty.

So theoretically the warranty should be worth no more than the cost of a service.

But what happens if you send a new watch like this to RSC which *should* be under warranty, but RSC sees that the card was never swiped when they punch in the serial #? Is that a problem?

For me it is more dependent on who the seller is.

When you're talking Rolex money, unless it's vintage, always go brand new with a warranty.

Seller is Watchguy NYC, who seems to have solid reputation based on yelp.

Good question, interested to know the answer to that as well.

I don't think Rolex could deny warranty work for a lack of a "swipe."

It would be interesting to see how that would play out in court if it ever really came down to it.

My vote would be to buy the cheaper piece. The cost to service is less than the difference as another member already posted

No it’s not worth it. If it needed service it would be cheaper then paying the extra for a warranty card

I would look at the big sellers here rather than on chrono24 which I know little about.
Why not reach out to Tony Geha? I would place more trust in someone like him who has an impeccable reputation and he is in your back yard! My2c.

Considering the amount of money I'm spending i would most likely get everything at once although i don't think it's worth it.

Too bad you couldn't go to an AD and have them swipe it for you. Well I'm 99% sure you can't as the serial number won't match the serial numbers the AD received to sell. But it could be worth investigating, maybe a small AD would do this for $1000. Or an AD about to lose their Rolex franchise...

Out of curiosity, how could the watch have been transferred originally without having the warranty card swiped?

If you plan to keep it and can safe a full $3k, then it’s a decent deal. In the unlikely event it needs service inside the 5-year warranty period you spend $700-1000. Still a win.

If you think there is even a remote chance of selling it, find an AD and get your best deal there. The warranty will likely matter to subsequent buyers.

Another good question. As in, how do Grey's get their inventory? I understand if they're able to give you the warranty, because it's simply a transfer of one owner to another (assuming they are buying in bulk, each card should be swiped right?). Where are these non-swiped watches coming from??

Absolutely not. A full service is about $1,000 which is from RSC, I'd go there before having those guys work on my watch.

To be clear, it is box and "papers", so the card comes with it, just never swiped

For that price it should be with warranty with your name on card, plastic still on, etc. Check with https://www.rolexforums.com/member.php?u=138560 as he's great to deal with.

All things being equal, I'd save 3K. If, and I say, if any work needs to be done and it doesn't have a warranty, a service is around $1100. I just had my Smurf serviced and it was a tad under $1100 and that included a new crystal. Moreso, do you trust the seller? Peace of mind is worth a lot, too. How much will vary from person to person.

Good thing is Rolex warranty is kind of obsolete and a good seller will cover you as well.

Would you be able to get a bit of a discount if you asked the AD?

I don't think an AD can get you to $29k, let alone $26,500.

If I’m spending that kind of money I want a watch that has been sold properly through an AD. I’m not saying I’d only buy it new but I want the watch to be sold legit so there are no warranty issues.

I'm a bit confused. Why would there be warranty issues? The warranty follows the watch.

That's where my question came in above - how do grey's actually get watches that don't have their cards swiped? I understand that a lot of Trusted Sellers here buy theirs through AD's in bulk, and everything gets swiped. But how these guys get it without a proper swipe / Rolex warranty and can sell for cheaper, is what baffles me.
