Black Enamel in Place of Lume?... Stock? Custom?
Hi all,
I purchased a 1971 Oyster Perpetual 1003 on Ebay (yes, I know I know) with the intent to have it refinished and gifted. It was an estate sale. I since changed my mind gifted a new watch. I am currently debating selling again or keeping, but was wondering about this weird black "lume"... was this tritium that turned black due to some exposure? Or simply black enamel painted over the lume? I've heard of watchmakers painting the back of watch hands to prevent lume erosion, but never the front. Has anyone ever seen this? Did this ever come stock in the rolex line... it looks expertly done. The whole watch is in pristine condition and running within COSC. Appreciate your help and any insight. |

It looks like the only lume on your watch is on the hands. The lume on the hands sometimes turns black if it is exposed to moisture.
Here is my old late 70s 6694 and my old early 60s Tudor. the lume on the hands is the same. It is actually quite common ![]() ![]()

Thank y'all. Very interesting... ended up selling it again anyway, but hopeful was helpful for the buyer!
