Perpetual Calendar Incoming!!!!

I am very happy to have received my first PC. It is the IWC Portuguese Perpetual Calendar.

It uses the Perpetual Calendar Module created by Kurt Klaus attached to the IWC caliber 5000. At the time of its launch, the calibre 5000 was both the largest automatic movement in production, and also boasting the longest power reserve of any self-winding movement.

The PC Module was released in 1985 and it was revolutionary at the time, because previous to 1985 the perpetual calendar was a fragile complication.

Back then, you would have to use a series of fidgety pushers, integrated into the case, and a stylus to correct each and every one of these indications individually. Worse, in most perpetual calendars if you accidentally try to adjust it during the date changeover period, you can jam or damage the movement badly.

That's why the Kurt Klaus module was revolutionary, rather than having all the irritating pushers, he wanted all the indications controlled by the same crown used to set the time.

It was the first time a PC could be adjusted only by the crown, making it the most user friendly ever.

Having handled the watch, I can say that it is absolutely easy to adjust. The module is integrated, so as you move forward the date, everything else will follow.

The downside to this is that if you accidentaly passes the date, there is no turning back. You will have to wait for the watch to stop to catch up to the date set.

Also, another practicality of this watch is the 7 days Power Reserve. I think it suits the PC perfectly, so you dont have to adjust it to much.

That's it, now the pics:

Great looking watch, congrats!

Interesting info on the mechanism to set the date. I would be terrified to go past the current day, as I've been known to do . But I guess that's why we have collections, and if I did go a bit too far it's probably a sign to save the IWC for tomorrow and wear something else

Excellent choice. Congrats!

This was on my list for a longtime... until I pulled the trigger on a JLC MUT QP which suited my slimmer wrists better.

Have fun with the piece. There is a lot of history there with the brand and the QP module.

What a stunning watch. Really love these.

Is that the Santoni made croc strap or the IWC own one ?

Congratulations and wear in good health !

A beauty, congratulations.

I've owned the white dial variant for 7 years or so. While the ease of adjustment through the crown is fantastically simple and was a motivating factor in my original acquisition I will say once the watch falls out of steady rotation there is a lot of crown winding to get back to the current date.

a beautiful timepiece, one of my "grails", very jealous~

wear it in good health!

This is the rose gold version? The pictures seem to be a bit less "rose gold" than I thought it would be.
