My AD offered a lower price for cash vs credit card, so I paid with a check. This was basically just passing of the savings of him not having to pay Visa 3%. Might as your AD if they have a similar deal.

And just a side-note as far as "cash" goes at an AD Remember paying anything over $9,999.99 in cash, and you are going to be also filling out an IRS form...I do a combo cash/credit at my AD at The Wynn, and it avoids all the above problems you mentioned, as well as IRS forms

If you have an AMEX just swipe away... Take the points and get urself a gift card... depending on what you buy you can go to Cheesecake Factory with those points or Flemings

I typically use a card if I am in the store. One time I had to call the CC company in store but it was no surprise as I was out of the country. Next time they must have done the math as they chose not to block me.

Nothing to be embarrassed about at all.

Use credit, you get extra protection with that.

I've just paid £6900 over the phone, first transaction with that card no issue.

A few years ago I made large purchase out of state. Later, when I went to get gas, my card had been blocked. A call to my CC cleared it up.

Because of that I called my CC before I made my purchase at the AD`s, especially since it was out of state.

If I have enough credit left on the card, there have been no issues. Also if you are known, a check will work too.

Actually most time Cash would command a better discount compared to credit cards, but in my case there was a tie in between the bank and the AD.
The DJ was at 19% off with Credit card compared to 10% on usual purchase.
But any how there was also issues using the Credit card due to activation issues.

So unless you had prior experiences with swiping your Credit card on huge purchases; its recommended to call up the bank to confirm availability of the limit.

And the five year warranty (before Rolex offered one).

But if you don't have one, just use what you have. If there's a discount to be had, and you're not in a rush to walk out with the BLNR, just transfer the agreed monies after you have done the deal. Then pick up when the cash has hit their account.

Happy shopping!

I've purchased a car on my debit card before. You will need to call your bank and have them lift the daily limit temporarily (Chase limits this to $5K on most personal accounts)

I also purchased my wife's wedding ring on a credit card and took advantage of their cash back bonuses. Each time I had to call ahead to let them know of the name of the merchant, the location and the estimated amount.

Never an issue. But as most have said, if you can pay cash, do it and use it to land yourself a discount.

I always get a better deal paying with a check or cash. For some people, getting credit card points is a big deal. Personally, I look at the overall price once ALL factors are taken into consideration. Just take your time and study all options and decide what's best for you.

No call or anything needed. I want to say his limit is 20-25k maybe. Can't remember the exact amount, but he didn't need to do anything special before the purchase.

He doesn't make many large purchases and Amex didn't call the AD during the transaction.
There typically isn't a limit on a gold Am Ex card.

Personal check. My AD offers me 3% off for a check vs. a card. It's a no-brainer for me.

Welcome to TRF.

I've found that direct transfer to the AD by wire gives me the best price. Vendors usually have to pay a credit card fee anywhere from 2-3 %.

You can use your debit card, just contact your bank and have them raise your daily spending limit, I have done it a few times with no hiccups.

I usually get the points on a CC and pay off right after - but I’ve used my debit card a cpl times as well. As previously stated call your bank - raise the daily limit - and voila.

Always put it on my credit card for points. Even if the transaction is below my credit limit, I call the bank in advance to give them a heads up about the transaction (rough amount, seller, seller location). Last thing I would want at an AD is a hiccup in the "moment" where I need to get on the phone with my credit card company to verify the purchase!

Very fortunately I'm in a position where I'm able to reward myself for crossing the 10 year mark with my firm with what I hope to be a Rolex. I have decided 100% to buy from an AD, and I'm hoping to find a BLNR because that's really what I have my heart set on.

My question lies with the logistics of making such a (relatively) large purchase. I was hoping to use my debit card but I've come to realize that most debit cards have a daily dollar transaction limit regardless of the balance of the account. I guess I could always put it on a credit card and pay it off immediately but I wonder if the transaction would be embarrassingly denied despite ample credit availability simply because of the high dollar amount.

I realize these questions could be answered simply by calling my respective banking institutions but I can't tell if these are stupid questions or not and I wonder if there's something I'm missing here. Surely people walk into ADs across the world on an impulse and walk out with shiny new Rolexes every day? Would anyone mind sharing their experience purchasing from an AD? Pitfalls or pro-tips?

Thanks everyone. Please forgive my naivete.
I use my Amex card at my AD and have never had an issue. As old expat said, the worst that will happen is that your card issuer might do an identity check. This happens all the time, so I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s to protect both buyer and seller, in the end, so isn’t something they’d worry about either.
