Looks like a replacement dial and hands. This James Bond went from Sean Connery to Roger Moore.

Very hard to value this condition imho. 20 something perhaps. It is a hard sale.

Late 5508, Swiss at 6:00 Poor lighting with photo. A better scan would help in natural lighting.

I got more informations from the seller.. the original dial was re printed by the previous owner... the seller installed this second dial... probably it is more a 70’ than a 1962 dial...

Only you can decide if you like it at that price range. It will never be an easy sale in that condition. Personally I prefer gilt dials to be glossy and perfect but then the price is more than double.

I think the dial is original but the surface may have been touched up or a repair attempted on the finish. Note that the = symbol is missing between 100m and 330 ft. Contrary to popular myth, most 5508’s left Rolex factory with the shorter minute hand that does not quite reach the outer ring.

Dial looks rough. Most likely sealed at some point in the past. The meters/ft is missing the marking as pointed out. Hands are service replacements but still match nicely. Original brass alloy bezel with service replacement insert (mk3)
There is rust I can see. It's located on the inside of the crystal retaining ring, water/moisture tends to get trapped there if the ring is stretched. The retaining rings on these early subs are very thin and fragile. I would recommend having the piece serviced soon. The retaining ring should be soaked in a solution to remove the rust, which suspends further deterioration of the metal. I think once some money is put into the watch, along with some love, it would be a nice preserved piece. It has it's shortcomings in the current condition, but it is far from worthless. Just need to make it a little more attractive again and mechanically sound. Has good bones. in the current condition, I would say maybe (13k to 15k USD) range would be fair. At least that's what I would pay up to if I really wanted it. |
