Lume, in essence.
It was 3:35am, and as dark as a November morning could be.
I only knew the time, 'cause I'd put my rheumy old eyeball really close to the crystal on my 16710, so that the feint ghost of the lume, could just about register on the cones and rods in my retina. I'm not considering changing anything, but I started wondering if, during a normal service, RSC test the photoluminescence, and recommend a change of dial, if the results are below a certain level? |

Sorry, but watch lume seems totally irrelevant in the age of electric lights. |

From what I remember if the dial is original and not damaged they will offer to replace it but not require it as part of service.

So are mechanical watches in the age of quartz and radio-controlled clocks. If we're using practical necessity as the underpinning for this pursuit, we might as well just pack it in.

Turn on a light at 2AM to read my watch? Nope. Luminox at night. Rolex during the day.

My bedside clock has a very faintly illuminated dial, and my watch is well out of reach, so I'd have to get out of bed to check the watch. I just look at the clock.
FWIW, the lume on my old 16610 is pretty pants, but I wouldn't want the dial and/or hands to be changed. |
