selling a watch on ebay

Hi All

I am here for some advice and tips. I have sold many items on ebay over the years but never an item such as a Rolex Watch.

I now know not to accept purchase by PayPal for a Rolex Watch.

- Best place to meet up for inspection?
- How to avoid the buyer denying receiving the item you sold?

Thank you very much for your helpful advice.

Very much appreciated.

eBay unfortunately sides with the buyer. And also takes a 13% fee. Why not become a pledge member here and sell through TRF. Only accept wire transfer. Just my opinion

If you're in a dispute, I'd recommend getting a lawyer if you're losing out on a lot, if not, maybe small claims court but you'll still have to track them down. If they're in the EU, I think there's one for cross-border claims.

eBay charges 10%.

I just sold a TAG and shipped USPS insured and signature required. No problem.

You must check the history of the buyer. They must have a 100% rating and been on eBay for a minimum of 2 years.

Check sold items on your watch to see the real price range it sold for. eBay people like discounts.

If you suspect a problem contact eBay and PayPal customer service immediately. Both have seller protection programs.

Forum members will have other suggestions. I like PayPal. It’s worth 3% for the protection.

If you're in London there are plenty of buyers so just do a cash on collection only option and meet at your bank, and pay the money straight in so you won't have any on you when you leave to be robbed of, and they can't use counterfeit money.

Super easy way to get scammed. I used to sell on there about 15 years ago. Somehow a guy managed to keep the watch, get a refund, and get me suspended. The only reason I didn't end up out my money, was that it's in their own rules that before a refund is issued... they have to have proof that i received my item back. This guy said the 5500 air king I sent him was broken. It wasn't. I offered full refund or insurance claim and he wouldn't cooperate because he was a scammer. He finally got banned after doing this to a few people. I didn't lose money, but i lost future money because they wouldn't reinstate my account. It takes a lot of feedback and trust to be able to sell high dollar items for market value on there. I wasn't willing to start over, so I quit selling watches. Just my experience and opinion, but I agree with above posts to sell here and accept wire only.

I have sold several watches on eBay and purchased a few. My "rules":

- Sell only to people that have many transactions, with a 100% record.
- Ensure by looking at their feedback that they haven't dealt only with low cost items.
- Ship by Fedex with signed receipt required for delivery.
- Insure the item fully.

When marked as received, I send the purchaser a message to confirm delivery.

I recently submitted a request for quote via Watch Finder. Pleasantly surprised at the offer. Have read mostly good things about them. Might be worth a look.

I also sold watches on eBay for 5 years starting in 2009 and only had one close call with a buyer. I was never a high volume seller - did maybe 1-2 deals a month.

The fees did rise between eBay and PayPal so I switched over to buying, trading and selling here. So that was a factor in my decision.

It was easy to start since I had been buying and selling race cars, trailers and race junk with higher values than the Rolexes. I was able to leverage that 100% satisfaction level as I left active competition and began with watches.

And I did learn the tricks scammers used but admit it has become worse.

So for the OP, I would suggest selling here before using eBay.

Before you ship, do your due diligence. Use Google and TRF search functions.

You can open an ebay store for a month to sell a big ticket item, and the fee cap for a store is $250.

Sure: Scroll down about half way for the Basic Store fees, Starter Store has a $750 max final value fee, and the Basic Store on up is $250.

Sound advice.

With the ever-increasing stories of auction ripoffs, no way would I ever attempt going that route. But that is just me; many folks who have experience with auctions have had good success.
