It’s 3 am local time and after several hours of delays and removing fans from the grandstands, FP2 is now underway.

Stewards gave Sainz a 10 grid spot penalty for changing a chassis due to damage caused by the track… no dispensation and request denied to dismiss the penalty given the circumstances. What a shameful start to the F1 race weekend I must say..::.

Hard to imagine the repercussions, if the cast iron manhole cover, had been launched towards a following car, that was travelling at, say 200mph.

Penalising a driver/team for repairing damage to race car, caused by poorly prepared track?....are they nuts?

First, my wife is giving me hell for us not going.
Second, my wife is seriously pissed the FIA "are being d-cks" not giving Sainz the ability to change his chassis for something caused by the improperly prepared track. Third, if we don't go to Vegas F1 next year she'll divorce me (ok, she won't, but F1 is definitely marketing well and creating desire). My wife said she'd be a flag girl, track worker, etc. Paul, 2024 Vegas F1... I know flag colors and need a 'helper' (my wife). Seriously, she's killin' me here that we're not there when we see many of our friends there in VIP, the stands, etc. Fourth, imho the FIA needs to be cool about Sainz. Not his fault. C'mon, be cool. PS: My wife is seriously jonesing. Guess I could try to get a Press Pass and report on the event, but I'd really love to see the on-site production facility that feeds the UK production studio, Vegas lighting / sound control systems (Dante I assume), etc.

Hope all this gets fixed to continue at least. I don’t like the whole spectacle of Vegas racing thus far, but heat see Formula One wiped off the schedule this weekend. Hope they can ensure the rest of the track is up to par as well for the safety of the drivers. It just felt too rushed this thing.

Their hands are tied per the decisions and regulations. This is definitely a bad thing for the chase in Constructors points. As you’ll see below, the Stewards could not find a loophole. First the decision to grant relief, then the penalty and hour later. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Understandable Paul, it's part of the heartbreak in racing. Anyone who has never experienced this hasn't raced much. Stuff happens no matter how well you prepare.

F1 falling into the hands of Liberty Media will be its greatest mistake unfortunately. 3 races in the states, 2 at artificially made circuits which I have no idea why it even exist when there are other better circuits. All the cringe fest before the race weekend is just sad and pathetic.

Good points. Had a Formula E race in NYC situation similar to this. A sudden downpour during Race 1 caught 4 drivers out coming down the straight and couldn’t turn in. Stack of pancakes type of contact with the wall crash cracked the RESS and its radiator on one car. The replacement of which caused a penalty of more grid spots than there were cars. But FIA had to apply the penalty. Now I’m not being an apologist, but have we considered the equity as well as the apparent inequity? It wasn’t the driver’s fault in the FE case or this case. In this instance, consider that some cars were damaged and some were not. The matter of a few cm in ride height adjustment may have made the difference. That is a team’s choice. Those who made the higher ride height choice (like MB and others) may not believe it fair if the code wasn’t being enforced against a rival. $$$Millions per constructor’s point gained/lost. 10 minutes of practice also not great. It was a pain to walk out there for just 10 minutes. Still it was pretty cool. The “free” food is lousy. Drinks are ridiculous. Tonight we’re going to show up right before FP3 instead of trying to be there when it opens. Then for qualifying we’re going to watch it from our room and stream the broadcast on ESPN+. Have a good view of the track so I was able to hear FP2 start and get up at 2:30am and see the cars running fast. |

It’s how America would do a big sporting event; like Miami on steroids. I’m not a race snob or anything but I follow F1 and watch a lot of their content throughout the year. The grouchy haters like Max are kind of bleh. Stupid events like this ultimately mean more money for the sport and more money for Max. If you view how much goes into making an event like this so 20 guys can drive around in circles; it’s incredible, amazing, and just plain obnoxious. |

However, the case of punishment is even more special. After all, SAI will now have a "half-new" car, which will benefit him in the remaining races. So I think that even if the stewards had had the opportunity to make a different decision, it is certain that the advantage should have been compensated in some form. In short, the situation would not be simpler even if they had the right to consider it. Quote:
But this will not help them to regain their pts in the championship. In general, my opinion the rulemakers should add an Act Of God clause, which can give the chance for the stewards together with the teams to make a decision for such cases. Probably this could help to achieve a good or at least an acceptable decision for all the involved. |

Toto had an interesting take during a presser.
He was asked whether this incident was a “black eye for F1” and how the sport can move forward from this. Toto answers: “That is not a black eye, this is nothing. We are Thursday night, we have a free practice session one that we’re not doing, they’re going to seal the drain covers and nobody is going to talk about it tomorrow morning anymore. So let’s…” But another journalist interrupts him in disagreement. Wolff defensively responds: “Did you ask the question? It’s completely ridiculous, ridiculous. FP1. How can you even dare try to talk back about an event that sets new standards for everything? “And then you’re speaking about a f***ing drain cover that’s been undone that’s happened before, that’s nothing. It’s FP1. Give credit to the people that have set up this grand prix, that have made this sport much bigger than it ever was.” He continued: “Liberty has done an awesome job, and just because in FP1 a drain cover has become undone, we shouldn’t be moaning; the car is broken. “That’s really a shame for Carlos, it could have been dangerous. Between the track and the FIA and everybody, we need to analyse how we can make sure this is not happening again, but talking here about the black eye for the sport on a Thursday evening.” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Despite the fact that I completely agree with Toto's opinion, I would be curious to know what he would have said if, say, Russel's car had been destroyed on the track?

Paul, yes indeed Toto was very expressive... and i agree with him. Many things were 'right', surprisingly so imho. plus yes yes yes we've seen these darn drain covers do their thing over the years.

Yeah, my wife is really into it... to the point that during the live Goodwood Festival broadcast when the kids do their cute race... she starts pointing out 'illegal' driving by kids doing more than one change of direction to block being passed. Honey-sweety, they're just kids. Let them have fun As for the F1 ruling, again, racing has a way of breaking your heart. 24-hour race and your car die on the last lap, sudden rain, the top-end of your Kent/Pinto engine cracks (common problem), a gear in your Hewland LD-200 decides to implode... the car just in front of you engine implodes throwing oil on a very heavy and critical braking / turn area and since it JUST happened in front of you there was no time for a flag warning and so you spin 360+... with the bonus of cleaning up the oil on your tyres/rims, suspension, helmet...

On my phone, I had to poke around the ESPN app and verify the fact that I was indeed a cable subscriber that carried ESPN (I'm on Spectrum FWIW). Sorry I can't remember the exact steps I took, but if verifying a cable subscription sounds familiar (part of it was having my cable login credentials handy), then it may help pointing you in the right direction. After doing this, I was able to watch FP2 live stream on ESPN+, and the replay on regular ESPN. On my TV, same story with reactivating the app. [s]The TV ESPN app sent an activation code to my email, and[/s] I had to reactivate the TV app. Then I had to re-verify that I was a cable subscriber. After this, I was able to watch FP2 live stream on ESPN+. Edit: Oops, I remember now, it didn't send an activation code to my email. I had to log on to my ESPN account in a browser, and enter the code displayed on the TV, then it reactivated the TV app. |

Weird so I was able to steam FP2 this morning from the hotel, but I bound it to my DirecTV and it was the replay.
Even though this is off topic, adding watch content. My wife and I got matching Santos to commemorate the event. This is the green one, she got the smaller ladies size. |

Thanks!
Oh one story I met a fellow Cal Bear over at the bar by the sports book. He stayed last night until they kicked him out; because it was technically Friday there was some kind of kerfuffle with the ticketing because he left and came back slightly after midnight and they had to use his Friday ticket and then get him to check out. For those asking for updated odds at Venetian from the form… |
