Also, I realize what a punk that the initial post made me sound like. I should've given more details. No one where I'm going is starving. We're staying at a Marriot for most of the time actually. It's not like I'm trying to be flashy and throw in anyone's face what they'll never have either. First, you didn't come off like a punk in your original post. Your concerns are legitimate.

Second, if you are overlooking G-Shocks as viable timepieces, you are missing out. I love Rolex and other Swiss timepieces as much as anyone here, but the G is a terrific, full-featured, durable and economical watch. They have their own kind of charm, and are loaded with features an automatic can only dream about. People that own them and live with them know this. There's also an absolute plethora of models to choose from.

I hope your trip to Ecuador is a safe one and your time spent with your brother rewarding, regardless of the watch you choose to take.

We were robbed 5 years ago driving in Tijuana, Mexico by not the drug dealers, nor a bunch of hoodlums, but by the 2 patrol men on the road. They demanded my money and the GMT I was wearing or jail time for the family because my 10 year old had her hand out of the window ...

In the end, for the safety of my wife and the kids, I gave up my GMT and some cash , and have never been back to Mexico since.

I don't understand why people have to or want to take expensive watches to places that are unknown to them. Does it really matter that you take a cheap watch with you or risk losing your expensive one? The answer is simple in my book, leave your good watch home and you'll avoid any risk of losing it.

No quandry, buddy. Very simple - if your brother lives there, he obviously knows the place and local situation like the back of his hand. He's given you sound advice - just listen to him, leave the Rolex at home in a safe place and wear some cheap watch just to tell you the time.

Can't get simpler than that.

Exactly, I spend a lot of time in Latin America. I would definitely not attract attention. It's all fun and games until you are in a situation. Sure, get the insurance and give up the valuable but, intentionally drawing attention is not what I want to do when traveling in Latin America. Every single one of my employees have been robbed more than once.

The thread is only 3 pages. I don't see how you could have come to that conclusion if you'd taken the time to review the thread. Read... it's free. So is your signature, and you might even want to live by it if you're going to take the time to have it on all of your posts.

JJ, I agree my man. The Rolex stays at home. Like I say, I'l a little disenchanted with the country due to the trouble we had in the past. I shouldn't have posted without giving more info in the inital post.

Crap dude, that sucks! I will say that I've never felt so alone as when we were in Cozumel and guys with M16's flooded our resort because in their words "There's someone of importance here". I was not happy at all, and we stayed in our room much of the last few days. I really hate to hear you had to put up with that. It's a hard pill to swallow.
