CapeTownWatches sent me a PM to ask what I meant and added that my comment could be damaging to his reutation as a seller. Below is my response. "It's not that I think the watch is fishy - it's just that the thread is purely about the sale of a watch. First, a new member ( the buyer) posts a question about a watch he has seen for sale - no problem with that. Then, the seller suddenly, from nowhere, joins the forum to say the watch is genuine and tells us all the name of his business. No doubt there will be a post from the buyer telling us all how amazing the seller is. It just feels like the buyer and seller are the same person joining a watch forum to promote his business. I do not doubt the watch is genuine and i beleive the watch will be an excellent example of that reference but just feel that this sort of promotion is not too ethical." I would like to apologize for my earlier post and welcome our two new members. |

Thanks SeamasterGMT. I concede that the thread could have been construed as self promotion, but I trust that my response clarifies the matter sufficiently. I realise that your comments were sincerely meant.
For the benefit of the other forumers, here is my reply to your original post: Thanks for your reply. I beg to differ regarding ramifications: damage to reputation based on hearsay or irresponsible, unsubstantiated comments can certainly be a side effect. That said, I take your point. Let me say that the buyer and I are most certainly not the same person. I do not sell internationally, so promoting my business is not my aim at all. The buyer mentioned to me that he had posted on this site, and I followed up out of interest - simple as that. In fact, the actual reason for his post was to get information regarding the unengraved case-back, and whether such a watch could be original. The thread was not "all about the sale of the watch". I answered his enquiry via the forum, based on the research I had done. The fact that I am the seller as well should not really be a factor. I am first and foremost an enthusiast. Trust this clears the matter up. |
