Decision time soon - Steel GMT IIc or DSSD

Final few points, if I can get some help with them...

1. Does anyone have any further views upon the level of discount I should try to go for with a UK dealer (that might not be the busiest because of their locality)?

2. Were the first DSSDs on V serial numbers, or were they slightly earlier?

3. Similarly, were the first steel GMT IIc watches on V serial numbers or earlier?

I'll probably have a look at any others they might have in stock to be certain, but I'm 99% certain that it will be one or other of the ones I've been speaking about!

My DSSD is a M serial. I would get the GMT. If you have small wrists the bulky DSSD will quickly get old. The watch itself isn't too large but it is very thick. I purchased a Sub-C so I didn't have to wear my DSSD everyday. Its thickness started to get on my nerves after 3 years. I still love the watch but a Sub-C or GMTIIC is a much better daily wearer. Also all the BS writing has started to bother me. Did they really have to write Ring Lock System on the watch???

Thanks, I wasn't sure if the earliest DSSDs were V or M. I'm pretty sure that the two watches the AD has have been sitting for several months, at least. Had it been that their stock was one of the first batch of DSSDs, that might have swayed me a little towards it.

I have both, just recently acquiring the GMT IIC, and I just absolutely love both of them. I have an older GMT II 16710 as well and a couple other GMTs from independent watchmakers. I happen to be a bit obsessed with GMT watches, so that is why I chose to add the 116710 to my collection. BUT, in your case, you already have a nice variety of pieces with the traditional form-factor/size.

No question in my mind - you should buy the DSSD, and I would not worry about wrist size. It will be fine. The Deep is such a lovely chunk of steel to own.

I can't comment on UK discounts, but in the USA you can do better than 10% or alternately find one through TRF.

This is one of the things that has struck me...in many ways, the DSSD is less like the Sea-Dweller 4000 than the GMT IIc is!

A few weeks ago, I was between the exact same two watches. I went with the DSSD. No regrets. I like the size (although I do not have huge wrists either). I will probably add a GMT as some point (to wear when I need something more subdued), but initially, wanted something that does not look like what everyone else is wearing. And to your point above, if you already have a SD, the DSSD will be more of a contrast, whereas the GMT will appear too similar. On the DSSD, I got 15% off at an AD, which was great.

I'm really not sure either, which is what bothers me. The Datejust was a present, so I didn't deal with the money. I bought the Sea-Dweller 4000 when used ones were still selling for list or perhaps a couple of hundred pounds above list price, so I didn't try for a discount on it either - particularly as I had been waiting about six months to get one.

As for the Daytona...discounts just don't happen on it in the UK, as far as I'm aware.

Negotiating isn't a problem to me, I do it every day in my job, but in my job I can work from a position of knowing the subject and what will represent a good deal.

The only real hint that I have is Mappin & Webb at Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport give a blanket 20% on everything (they're absorbing VAT (sales tax) whether you're flying internationally or not). They won't stock the more popular Rolexes, but they had loads of Datejusts, Day-Dates and a couple of the less popular professional models. They also had good ranges of Omegas, etc.

If they can manage 20% as a starting point there, I'm wondering what I might be able to get from an independent AD?

Own both watches, with large wrist. I had to add a link to the GMT to fit.

Prefer the Deepsea but wear the GMT more, it's become my work wear. I've beaten it up pretty good but it still looks great, all scratched up. DeepSea is big but not intrusive. I've smacked the GMT on way more things, so I don't think the size is an issue. Or, maybe, I'm just more concious of the thicker DS.

DeepSea would be the last Rolex I would sell, if there was ever a need.

Both of mine are "M" serial, I've never seen a Z Deepsea or SS GMT ceramic (D serial earliest for Solid Gold GMT ceramic) but I can't say "no Z exist" but there would be few if they did.

I'd have to agree on the GMT IIc between the 2. I have both and personally love both, but the Deepsea is not a small watch and may be tough unless you have large wrists, as a daily watch. The polished center links on the GMT are scratch magnets though, as nice as the watch is. I tend to save the GMT more for dressier wear and wear either my sub date or my regular sea dweller as daily watches. But, that's just me.

GMT2c for me, the DSSD is a fantastic looking watch, but if you have smaller wrist size, it may not wear as well.

But should definitely try both on.

GMT IIc for diversification. For me, the SD 4000 is much preferred over the DSSD. Beautiful clean face and just a gosh more wrist presence with the weight. The DSSD is just too high off of the wrist for my taste. Get one and go for a run, you will know what I mean.
