Get the Daytona. I do love my Exp I for everyday use however if I had the chance to land a Daytona I would jump on it!

My first Rolex is a Daytona. I bought it not because it was hard to get, the perceived value or hype...I got it because I have been wanting one for the longest time and I plan to wear it for years to come.

Only get the Daytona if it truly sings to you - don't buy into the mystique or history of what others may think because you'll only end up selling or trading it. Try them both on again and get what works for you.

Personally I think the Exp39 is the real sleeper in the Rolex line-up. I certainly don't think less of that model than I do of the Daytona.

I didn't make it back to the AD today, will go in the next few days and spend some more time with it and the Exp. to see which one really stands out. Will keep you posted. Thanks for the opinions. This site is a great reference and has many great contributors.

Now I have to ask since I was just reading the thread about keeping your chrono running all the time - do you leave yours running? The other thread had various opinions on whether or not it would damage the watch. Just curious.

In all seriousness get the watch you want and will enjoy. I imagine this won't be your last Rolex so my advice is get the one that's harder to get now and available and the others will always be around when the itch comes back.

I do not leave it running. I use the chrono function quite often though...brewing tea, kids' timeout, grilling, etc. it's quite handy.

Made it to the AD today. First of all, let me say thank you to the people who PM'd me with advice. Where I'm at right now is I really love both watches and I know that I'll be thrilled with either as my first rolex. I decided today that I will eventually own both

Whats holding me up right now is that I feel like I would wear the explorer everywhere and not worry about it, and that I would be a little more cautious with the daytona given its higher cost and shiny parts. The AD offered to throw in some other jewelry to sweeten the deal, but I'm going to do a little more browsing of the trusted sellers here and see if that makes it an easier decision. BTW, my wife said get the daytona - great girl

My opinion - the 39mm Explorer I would be the worst choice for holding value, it's very much a love it or hate it watch. Most people prefer having a date and the new Explorer II is stealing all the attention from it's stepchild. If you watch the various "for sale" boards on a regular basis the new 39mm Explorer's aren't generating much buyer interest.

Is it going to be an everyday watch? A watch that you want to wear everywhere and everyday? Or more of a special watch? The Daytona is just as rugged as the Explorer although it may show superficial scratches more easily which may cause you anxiety. You have to weigh up how you plan to treat the watches, and your own personal level of 'preciousness' that you will show to your watches. Me personally, I treat my watches like I would a new car. Baby it for the first month, washing and cleaning it every night, obsessing over the smallish scratch, protecting it at every opportunity. But then after that 'honeymoon' is over, I treat them like an ordinary possession and just use them and not worry about scratches etc.

Definitely an everyday watch, and your points are the main thing on my mind. I'm going to think about it for a few days and shop around on the forum before I make up my mind.
