A friend of mine had a sold gold Cartier Santos
given to him in the 80's by Sir Elton John. He had the back engraved with a nice friendly inscription. It read: "Put it back, you thieving toe-rag!" Needless to say, we thought it humorous at the time. |

I like the idea of engraving.. I would do it to commemorate a special occasion or milestone in my life.

It would be hard to engrave anything on the clasp. The clasp is curved even at its slightest angle. I engraved the back of my DSSD. I was inspired to do so after watch Unknown with Liam Neeson. Saw the engraving on the back of "his" DSSD, and immediately had to have mine engraved. I engraved mine on the case back, which is where it is most appropriate to do so.

Purchase another caseback and put it in the watch box
If the day comes that you want to sell or trade, you can put it back to stock with the new caseback and keep the inscription as a keepsake

I wouldn't hesitate. If you want to engrave why not? -resale bahhh! if the inscription represents an important moment then = no flip.

I engraved my GMT in 1971 while serving in Viet Nam with rank, name, and year. I didn't know any better at the time and didn't consider the watch as a collector's item in the future, but in retrospect I'm okay with it because I will never sell the watch. This was my first Rolex and although watches will come and go this one will stay. I would not engrave another watch unless it was part of a special event and having the assurance that I would never sell it, but that contingency has a very low probability for me now.

It's weathered quite a bit over the years but is still visible. The photo enhances the engraving somewhat.

I have engraved one for my son and will give it to him when he earns it (details TBD). I bought him a 14060M, which I love, and just put a very simple message in the case back. It's sitting in the bank safe waiting for him to be ready.

I had my polar Explorer II engraved on the case back, in an Old English font. It reads "Solve et Coagula"...

I've never had the desire to engrave anything, let alone my watch, but I'm the sort of person that likes things as close to original condition as possible.
I can understand the appeal and it's significance for others though. Each to their own. |

My SD was gift from my wife on our wedding day and its engraved w/ our wedding date. Resale doesnt matter to me as this will be passed down to my son or daughter on their special day or accomplishment.

An engraved gold watch for 25 years of service......sadly a thing of the past. Just remaining with one company for that long is now nearly impossible.

It's a great idea...my wife had my Sub engraved prior to giving it to me as a gift.
It reads: "You are my dream come true. It's you for me & me for you." http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=184550 |

Great thread... My SS daytona was a wedding gift from my wife. I have full intention on passing it down to our daughter who is one now. I been contemplating about engraving something on it before i pass it down.

I engraved my 114060 to commemorate the birth of my first child on 1/8/14. I plan to give the watch to him when he is mature enough to respect it and care for it on his own.

A wedding present is one thing I would want to have engraved. I would not consider selling that watch either. This would probably make the watch harder to sell.

I dont know if I would engrave my own, but if I received one as a gift, I think it would be great! Also, If I am gifting one of mine, I would definitely do it,
I dnt like watches because of their resale value....I have my gold case dress watch that my mother got me for high school graduation. It ismengraved on the back, and is very meaningful. |

I've been meaning to get my sub engraved for a three years now. I see no issues with engraving it, it's completely reversible

I am totally engraving mine when I find a great engraver:
My Name "YOLO" DATE My wife thinks I am crazy. But it is a message to the people who will wear it and my frame of mind when I bought it. |

May seem like an obvious question, it does to me, but, if you have the case back engraved, do you have your local specialist remove it and just take the case back to the engraver or do you give them whole watch and they engrave the back whilst the watch is complete?
