Maybe, if your motivation is to "show wealth". Of course, it can also signal you are either careless, can't afford a nice one, or don't have the money to get it fixed.

What is "says" probably states more about the observer than the wearer. One thing's for sure though, I'm probably not going to let that guy borrow my car.

Well I used to be like you when I had my first and only, for 2 years, Rolex, a sub C, but yes for me all the sport models are real sport watches and real tanks, so in worse case you are going to scratch them, like I did, but nothing that can't be fixed, it's all a question of perspective, and the way you look at your watches, but Rolex are real sport watches not like AP RO's or PP's, so they are made to resist hard action, which makes them IMO beaters, and when I say beater I just mean pool, sea, motorbike and things like that, probably wouldn't put any watch to go surfing or something of the sort.

But to answer your question yes many people use Rolex as a beater, I know a few on this forum

Hahaha, what guy? Me? You know that in 25 years of motorcycle and car driving I had 3 times minor scratches, 2 times in car, never my fault, and 1 in motorbike this time, but I minimized to the max the damage, an amateur rider would probably be in the hospital right now, my few years of judo practice probably helped also, instead of trying to resist the fall I went with it and just rolled on myself a few times

To be honest I prefer when people don't see what watch I am wearing, that's 1 nice thing about Thailand, I'm going to live there in 10 months, is that people there think you are wearing a fake if you have a Rolex or another well known brand, not even talking about AP or PP or any top brands, they don't even know what they are… And even if they think you have the real thing, violent crime is almost at zero there, so apart if you are very drunk at night, nothing will happen to your watch, not like in Paris where I live...

Well it's very simple, if you have well known watches like Rolex, or not so well known but in gold, I would advise to be very careful in the metro, buses, touristic areas, as we have plenty of pickpockets, and also violent attackers which will attack you even for a smartphone, if you are careful you should be ok, just try not to show your expensive watches, jewelry or cash, and try not to pass as the basic tourist, Paris isn't the most dangerous city in the world but crime is high…

Before going on vacation I hesitated to take the BLNR or my brand new Patek 5712, but really glad I took the Rolex, as the Patek is supposed to be a sports watch but clearly more fragile, and the bracelet being as it is if it was seriously scratched as my Rolex is I would have to send it to Patek and since it's very thin it wouldn't be great to have it polished.

I have just similar thoughts.
I have a SS Daytona as beater, I bought it to wear it about 6 years ago.
I have had it with me also in Thailand, Sweden, Denmark, Uzbekistan, China, Turkey, UK, Russia etc..(and in some of those places several times). I have many great memories with it at home and abroad.
Of course it has scratches, but I even thought, when I will get it serviced in couple of years, I will ask them not to polish it.
Some picture of the clasp, but these scratches are not from desk-diving only, and I am proud of that:)
