If you have to worry about the cost of peeling off stickers, I would ask if you are the sort of person who should be buying a Rolex.

Worrying about peeling off stickers shows that the money is more important than enjoying the watch and that is truly sad.

Why?

Wear it in good health and enjoy that bad boy. I never buy a watch only to make it a safe queen.

However, if you bought it to use as an investment to sell for a premium later then I guess leave it as is and put away in safe.

One doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the other. Some people like to collect things and keep them mint, plain and simple. Don't assume there's no enjoyment in that just cause you don't understand it.

I lean towards wearing what I keep, but I certainly understand the mentality of those who strive to keep their collection mint.

I'll share my experience. Two years ago I found a NOS Sea Dweller 16660 A-serial. Paid a mint for it and was determined to wear it and keep it forever. It was amazing to basically have a time capsule on my wrist. Over time though, I found myself not liking the SD as much as I thought I would. Ended up biting the bullet and selling it after a year. I lost around $1500 on the sale. With a discontinued in-demand watch like this, I think taking one from NOS to used only makes sense if a person has no intention on selling. But really ask yourself how strong this "intention not to sell" is. It is very tempting to just wear it and worry about consequences later. In a perfect world, keep the NOS example you have tucked away and find a good condition used one to actually wear. I don't think it is ridiculous to have this debate over a watch in cases like this. NOS examples are extremely limited and command a significant premium. At the end of the day do what you want as long as you understand the ramifications.

Fair point, there is nothing wrong in collecting, I have over 200 gold cufflinks and 80 fountain pens, very few of which get actual use.

However in this instance the OP wants to wear the watch but is worried about the financial hit of removing the stickers. If the cost was agreed to be say $1, he would wear it. In this instance the cost of the stickers is reducing his enjoyment of wearing it.

When you start to think of it in this way it seems silly. If you purchased the watch to wear, wear it! Nothing wrong with collecting, but you obviously bought this to wear it or you wouldnt be asking the question.
Look at it this way...lets assume that wearing it may lower the resale by $2,000 ober time. Is it worth $2,000 for you to wear and enjoy and lv? If yes, wear it....if no, dont

I have little doubt it's gonna cost a few $ to peel the stickers off but from what you said you bought it to wear it in my opinion that's what you should do. The watch is beautiful and needs to see the light of day!

Gotcha! I understand. But I still don't think it's right for you to say what sort of person should or shouldn't own a Rolex cause someone is being financially cautious.

I think that the collectors mentally can creep into all of our minds. And really No one likes to throw away money and if you mix in a tendency to flip you have a recipe for regret.

You're right that if the OP would lose $1 he would certainly wear the watch. But you're just setting down a subjective path. I don't know anything about your pens but if I told you using one of your pens would drop its value by $10k would you put it away preserved in a safe? What about $100k? What about $100? We all have different ideas of value, and IMO is not fair to say someone shouldn't be in the club cause they have concerns about losing money.

I think some members are missing the point. These discontinued models potentially have a dramatic jump in value, more so for un touched pieces.

That zenith Daytona for example, even if money is not an object, that pieces is likely appreciating every day.

I'm not a fan of using watches as an investment. First, I simply don't have the will power to keep a watch in a safe. It would drive me bonkers. Second, If I really was interested in maximum rate of return, watches are at the bottom.

Still, if you wear the watch and enjoy it for 30 years and then sell, you're still going to make out pretty nice.

I've got two NOS sitting in a safe, and I enjoy having them there. Very much actually.

And peeling off stickers on a current watch, is different than something discontinued. Once these are all gone, they are all gone. Can't get them again.

Considering I've got a BNIB LV sitting in a safe, I'm all for people pulling off their stickers. The less there are in the world, the better it is for me.

I would see what the market would allow for a sell or a trade. I would then look at what I have in the watch. That figure would help me make an informed decision. If I could sell or trade it and make a decent profit 2K or more I would sell it and buy a watch that I would wear. My ownership is for wearing, not investing. If you love the watch and are not going to flip it then peel the stickers and wear it and enjoy.

I don't know much as far as which watches are worth what and which ones are actually going to be good investments. If this particular watch is a good investment, I agree with the put it in a safe and forget about it...then go buy a watch to wear.

Think about it like putting that money in your retirement or putting it away for your kids college or a rainy day or something.

However, if it isn't some amazing special investment watch score...rip them off and wear it.

Same could be said for ANY limited edition watch ever...
Not arguing your point, just offering an alternative view. Don't ever buy a limited edition watch with plans to wear it, if that is your logic.
These LV subs were produced in the tens of thousands...not exactly rare.
I have a Panerai SE which they only made 500 ever. There was a time when it was worth a lot more than it is currently (Panerai market has dipped). Glad I decided to wear it and have been enjoying it , because I couldn't care less. Had I let it sit in a safe, I would be disappointed, but it turns out I continue to enjoy the heck out of it and have gotten more than my money's worth already.
Keeping track of a stock and real estate portfolio is one thing...watches are for fun.

Sorry for the delayed response but I am in Spain and have just been out for a long lazy lunch at the top of a mountain with see views, hence the delay.

Ok another point, I am currently wearing a 1981 Freccione Explorer2 and the exterior is well worn, all the numerals on the bezel have faded etc.

Last year I took it into my AD for a service and he was horrified when I suggested tarting it up to look new. His advice was to let it look its well worn age and just service the calibre. His point was that restoring it to look pristine not only kills the history, it also devalues it.

Therefore would not the OP be better off just wearing it, giving it the occasional knock etc and let it age as nature intended.

Just a thought.
