The story:

The start of 2017 was a rough one for me and my family personally with a couple big curveballs that life can throw at you sometimes, but at the same time I've become thankful for them as it's really been a good reminder to appreciate what I'm lucky to have and what's truly important in this thing called life! After sitting on my hands for awhile, I decided that I'd go for a new watch to add to my 16710 since I had gone quite some time without having a second watch after selling my 116520 black dial a couple years back.

It's taken me a bit of time to realize this (yes I can be slow ) but for me I am continually learning that things in life don't really actually matter, it's all about the memories! So I told myself that I wouldn't just buy a watch and have it FedEx'd to my house and just open it at home and then go back to my daily routine like I had done 10 times previously, instead I wanted to make a real event and memory out of it so that when I looked at the watch, not only would I admire it but recall a great trip and time.

The timing worked out perfectly when I convinced my old man to finally go for the older Porsche model he had been lusting after for the past couple years (a 993 coupe for the Porsche enthusiasts). I was able to locate him one down to nearly every option including exterior and interior colors in North Atlanta. We had it shipped to Beverly Hills, and I had arranged for my watch to be also shipped to Beverly Hills so we would make it quite the trip and drive the car up to Silicon Valley where he lives after a couple of days in LA.

As for the watch itself, I had posted a couple threads in the past month or so about getting your thoughts on the 116515LN DaytonaC with the chocolate dial on the leather strap as I had owned it before and loved it, and now that it was discontinued I was enticed by buying a BNIB one while they were still easy to source. But the 116500LN Black Dial won out on that poll and I agreed that in Hawaii in the tropical climates here, the leather strap just couldn't stand daily use and not being able to clean it bothered me. Plus, the 116500LN was a bit more understated/less dressy which really appealed to me.

Then I started playing with the idea of finding a new 116519LN WG DaytonaC on the Oysterflex bracelet and you guys actually ended up favoring that one over the 116500LN!

I do love strap watches and prefer them to bracelets, but at the end of the day the 116500LN won out as even after paying a sizable premium for my black dial SS Daytona, the WG model would have been at least $25-27k. Being that I really wanted a Daytona (it came down to solely either the 116500 or 116519, the Daytona is my favorite watch design by a mile) to commemorate the LA trip and also to help bounce back after a rough start to the year, I pulled the trigger on the black dial SS DaytonaC. I figured I can wait a couple years until the WG prices go down and maybe pick one up then.

Not much needs to be said about the SS DaytonaC that hasn't already been said, but for me it is just truly perfection. The case size, the new bezel, everything...I am just loving this thing and it's been on my wrist daily since I bought it and I intend to keep it that way!

A special shout out to Patrick (ocwatchguy) for helping me make this happen, like I said earlier I am happily candid about the fact I paid a substantial markup on the watch at the market rate, and in return I got my DaytonaC with no waitlist, no AD tricks or games, my name on the card, BNIB with stickers on. Also what is even more special about the Daytona is that Patrick was able to have a special phrase engraved on the casebook for me, my birth year (89) is in the serial number, and the purchase date of 7-17-17 has 3 7's in it :) The premium was easy to swallow as it goes both ways, I have saved a good amount of money by purchasing from him versus an AD

Anyways, we ended up having a truly memorable trip in Beverly Hills, LA, and up to the Bay Area, enjoying the car, watch, and each other's company which is what it's all about!

Enough talk...here's some pictures!!!
wear it in good health

Great story, nice watch, cool car. I had a 993, in that stupid arrest-me-red color. I so much prefer the ruby red that your dad got, I'm sure he's loving it! It looks great, glad you guys could share that experience together.

And I like the sentiment of the engraving too. Well done!
