This would be a dream collection for any wis. You would have a watch for any occasion. In my opinion, nobody in their right mind would look at this collection and say "I would trade this all for a Daytona". I guess desire makes people irrational.
Since I am not a Wis, this would not be my dream collection. I'll pass on your dream collection and give me the ceramic Daytona.

The suggested collection is a very good collection of watches. Many would be happy to have these watches as their collection. One way to look at this, is that for the price of a Daytona you could have this collection. Another way to look at this is that for the price of this collection you could have a Daytona.

As you say, that is your opinion. Some other WIS with a Nomos, Seiko Lord Marvel, and Vostok Amphibia would look at anyone of the watches you listed and think no way anyone in their right mind would trade what I have for that.

This might sound crazy, but different people have different tastes.

I get your angle but I’d take the white Daytona instead of those four any day of the week!

No one is making anyone buy one. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It's that good. It's way nicer in person than in pictures.

I don’t like Daytonas but if forced to choose, I would take the Daytona vs. the other watches mentioned.

Great watches in the hypothetical collection. The Daytona is also a great watch, not for me though so I bought a ROC at roughly the same price as the market price of the Daytona

Each to their own

Which begs the question, are you into collecting watches at all?

For the market price of a new ceramic Daytona

Interesting thread. As a Daytona owner, I would find it very difficult to value all those put together as I do my 116500.

Nothing wrong with people looking at resale value as part of their decision to make a luxury purchase, and that includes a watch purchase. You don’t like it...then don’t do it. I look at all of my expensive purchases with resale as a part of my equation. ie. Cars, homes etc.
To each his own.

I buy smart so I have never over spent but the end goal is not making money on this or actually ever selling any of my watches. And if the market crashes and the value of my watches go to 0, I won't care in the end. I'll buy a few more.

I think it's more similar to this, since the other watches listed are top watches as well.

1. A hyped up 991.2 GT3/2 RS that people are trying to flip at 300-400k

vs

2. A 991.2 GTS + BMW M2/M3/M4 + MB S coupe + ...

I would go with option 2.

This is a way better comparison. I would also go with option 2.

Well your comparison is more like a gold Nautilus v a dress Patek and VC/AP, this is rarefied territory, my example is more what a normal incomed person with a passion has as realistic alternatives, and how he would go for his dream car/watch over 4 merely good alts.

I didn’t have to pay “ market” Price for mine, but I definitely wouldn’t trade it for those four watches.

Some don’t regard the Daytona as anything extra ordinary, but judging by grey prices, more than a few find it pretty special.

Yes, but for the market price of 2 Daytonas, you can have a Daytona *and* the other 4 iconic watches :)

The Daytona is a nice watch, I understand why some people like it but a lot of people venerate it because it is hard to get which creates a perception of false value. In turn this has fuelled the hype and overvalue on the grey market. It is no better made than other Rolex. And all Rolex are well made but mass produced factory watches. They are not the ‘best’ or even close but they are top of the midrange.

I completely understand the point the OP is making. The watches he has listed are classic WIS favourites. JLC as an example is a less popular make than Rolex but most WIS know they make watches/movements that are more high end and more exotic but not as robust or practical. PP and other top range makes have used many of their movements in the past.

Everyone likes different things and I have no doubt that some are one watch guys and genuinely love the Daytona. Having a good resale value on a watch helps us justify the silly money we sometimes pay. So the arguments are subjective.

The OP is actually trying to demonstrate how over valued Daytonas are by giving examples of what else the money could buy. He could equally have said the same money can buy a Vacherone Constantine Overseas which is a far higher end watch than any Rolex. Those in the know understand the hierarchy of watches and wonder why people buy Daytonas for this much. Personally I don’t think much of the Daytona but there are other Rolex models I would rather have than the cheaper and better watches I could have. It’s because I am a midrange watch guy and the reliable robustness and function is more important to me than craftsmanship and watch making art.

This topic only comes up because recently Rolex have been propelled into a higher market segment by the grey dealers that they are not the best in. It means they are subjected to a level of scrutiny that is bad for their reputation. In the midrange they have always been King.

Honestly, I just prefer the one Daytona over those 4, regardless of price. If I could only keep one watch in my collection it would be the 116500 it’s not about cost, value retention or resale....just absolutely beautiful to me.

But the great part is we don’t have to choose for each other. They sell all of these watches so we can all spend our money in whichever manner gives us the most pleasure.

I wouldn't call it smart buying a Daytona at 2x retail.

wait till you hear how many subs and speedmasters you could buy for the price of a minute repeater...

this is all a very silly comparison--different people like different watches. I would hope that if you're going to spend your money on a sub, a reverso, a speedmaster and an el primero you're doing it because you like those watches; not because the numbers line up well with whatever objective collection-building algorithm you seem to be using.
