If you’ve got the money and you want the watch, buy it whatever means possible. The enjoyment of wearing it for the extended amount of time is worth far more than the premium you paid.

If you cannot afford the watch you want on the grey market I would suggest you make friends with an AD and get on every waitlist you can (I’ve read of people getting on waitlists across the globe). Good luck on your hunt and I am looking forward to your incoming sooner than later.

So basically you're asking us if you should buy a watch at the price for which it is selling.. try inserting any other object into that sentence and say it out loud.

If you're going to spend 20k+ on a Daytona (for example) - and no other amazing values from other brands at 20k+ (after discounts/grey) motivate you (a full gold IWC perpetual calendar for example) ... then just buy it! if it makes you feel better - think about it this way... even those who paid MSRP really didn't - they established a relationship with their dealer paying full price for things that many many of us bought for discounts elsewhere (jewelry, Submariners, DDs, GMTs and Datejusts from DSW, long before the 'crazy-times' -- take all the thousands sacrificed in discounts over those years, and apply it to the current MSRP, and most people are probably even..)

If you're 69, and still care what others think, and define yourself by the Logo of the watch on your wrist, then there are bigger issues here than grey market trends..

Just be honest with yourself, because you are asking a question that really only you can answer.

Bad form guy.

Ever think it’s been OP’s dream to own a Rolex and now that he is close to hitting the last quarter of his life (if he is lucky) it’s time to finally squeeze the trigger and buy one?

In the current environment I recommend just buying at market price. Unless you have use for jewelry that’s the way to go.

I don’t think you are going to get a watch from an AD by making calls. Would suggest finding 1-2 ADs locally and stop in the store, share some life stories etc - establish rapport. Then set yourself a time frame at which you’d give up and go the trusted seller route .

Really, at this age, YOLO if you can afford it is actually sensible.
Vs the millennials, and some in their 40's, who have nothing saved and are trying to keep up with the Joneses on Facebook and Instagram.

Great advice. I couldn’t have said it any better.

Ask for Daniel he is not your typical SA.

Go in person and talk watches, history of watches, get to know him and let him know you. He is a good guy.

This. If you are NOT looking for a new sub, it will come. Even for a first time buyer. This is how you start a 'relationship'.

Definitely true. I have multiple 'hot watches' by forum standards from the AD. Even discount on SS professional series before all this madness. But I also bought a few PM pieces and lots of jewelry for my wife

I was faced with the truth of mortality this was week. Someone I knew my age is now gone unexpectedly. Bodies are funny things that don’t follow any rule book.

If it’s not going to cause you any financial burden then do it. Worst case scenario you can sell it, but try to do everything you can to make sure you really want it. For me that means I have to try the watch on to feel its comfort.

It's just money, what else are you going to do with it?

If you can get the OP, in the colour you want, don't hesitate, buy it, and don't look back.

Good luck!

Dear friend,...my advice go GREY DEALER,...I “was” on a so-called list for almost 3 years at 4 different AD’s for a 116500LN(Black Dial). I even offered to PAY IN FULL if it was able to be “Special Ordered”, but all the “B.S.” and condescending remarks from the AD’s were a complete TURN OFF. I make a pretty good living and I’m work very hard, the nonsense and disrespectful approach from AD’s will result in NEVER getting my money! Back when “COVID-19” started shutdowns in March, I made the decision to purchase my watch from DavidSW because prices came down a little “temporarily”, more importantly a lot of my clients are very well off and probably spend over $100k with these “AD’s” and they can’t even get one of the “Hot Models”. The WatchWorld has changed due to Instagram, YouTube and the games of “moving watches” out the back door of these AD’s! Don’t waste your “hard earned” money at these AD’s because they don’t care about people anymore. The sales staff need to realize that when a person is willing to spend at least over $10k on a watch a little bit of “respect & courtesy” is required!!!!(((if you can afford a little premium and are willing to negotiate with Grey Dealers, you should be happy because the REAL GAME is getting one in your wrist!!!))). Best of Luck!

If you can afford it, decide what you really want and buy it now at market price.
The market is crazy hot right now at ADs and their stock is low from what i have seen at a lot of places. There was a flurry of watches released in the US from what was sitting in NY for months from the shutdown. Once that is shipped out, supplies may be light. While things are open, distancing is still in place so production of everything everywhere is less than normal. Not a great time to be starting the courting of an AD relationship for anyone.

From a fellow 60 year old (albeit on the younger side lol), here's my advice:

Go buy 3 watches TODAY. The Pelagos, BBGMT, and the BB58. Whatever colors you like. From the classifieds, AD, trusted sellers, whatever. Just buy them.

You will instantly have a fantastic watch collection to enjoy RIGHT NOW, while you are now free to sit back and play whatever game the AD's want you to play to get a Rolex in your collection. And...should that not pan out, then you've still got, I say again, a fantastic watch collection.

You're welcome...and good luck from another 'mature' member.

Remember the gray dealer price is the actual market price.

The AD nonsense has it's own price. At 69, I'm sure you value time over money so buy what you want and don't look back.

Think of it as an investment in your next of kin if applicable.

I think OP shall be a lot easier to get so why not give it a few months to find out, otherwise, or for other hot models like daytona, pepsi, blnr, hulk/cermit, etc. just go grey.

If you plan to have more than one Rolex, the other option is to bundle a PM if, say, DD is what you love and can afford. You will have a much better chance to get both at retail prices and more in the future.

Initially I contacted every AD within 90 miles and was told either maybe in a few years I might be able to buy one or none were available and I even ask to be put on a list to no avail ie no real selling by going down the list to the next person. One dealer did say I could put some money down on one but they couldn't guarantee a watch would ever come in and had no policy in place as to refunding my money even if the watch didn't come in within 24 months. Then I heard somebody say they had to wait 10 years for their AD to get a Daytona in for them So far I have purchased only from G.M. or Watchbox pre-owned. Oh, the pre-owned came with 4 1/2 years left of the factory warranty, most likely flipped. And to top it all off I am 69 years old...All the AD's in Ohio are like the rest of the country, they have their established customers, of which I am not. Or they just don't have any Rolex's that I want. Here's what I have in mind, almost any of the steel ones except the Yacht Dweller. So I ask again, what are my options? I can only think of either Grey Market or Pre-Owned ie flipped. What would you do in my shoes? And I'm ok paying what I have to. I failed to mention there is one AD about an hour away who gave me some hope when I called about the 2020 ones and he said he might call me if an OP in the color I ask about came in, so I am optimistic at least with one Rolex Authorized Dealer to go to...just have to wait, don't think it will be too long as we had a good talk.
Sorry about your predicament. This is exactly why the whole "VIP customer" concept is total BS, in my opinion. The guy who already owns dozens of Rolex sports models gets 1st dibs on everything? That's total garbage.

In truth, I have found that my most satisfying experience in this hobby has been from the online purchases I've made. The selection, ease of purchase, and delivery have been incredible. Well worth the premiums. Instant availability. No hassle, no games, no disappointment. Now, whenever my colleagues ask me about my watch, I point them to the Trusted Seller that I got it from, without hesitation.

My advice: Buy the model you want the most, get it online, have it now, enjoy it. Don't just go for "any stainless steel my AD can get me"... go for "THE stainless steel of my dreams", after you've carefully weighed the options. Be that a Daytona, Sub, or Yacht-Master, whatever. Just don't settle on the OP. It'll be a waste of money if you look down at it and still desire something else. Suck it up and get the grail piece, even if at a premium. You're 69. You can either live the next 30 years with your grail, or wait 30 years and never get it.

This may work for some, but for many others, Tudor would never come close to scratching the itch. If price were not a consideration, I’d rather have a single Sub, GMT, Daytona, etc. than 20 Tudors.

Edit: and I own Tudor as well

To add to my earlier comment: buy grey now, get yourself on the list (if possible) at AD(s) and if you get lucky down the road sell the new watch to a grey to recoup some of the cost :)

OP,

I can’t add to any of the advice given - the good and the bad. I’ll just say that I do hope you will have a very long, very happy and very healthy life. Hopefully your Rolex dream will come true soon. Life does work in mysterious ways.

Hugs,

Alex
