I have heard a couple people discuss dropping to 40mm, or even upping it to 43, what about the new case in the submariner? Make it a 41?

I think 41mm would see a lot more interest. I have 7-3/4 wrist and it wasn’t until owning it did I realize how large it wears. I mean even the SD43 wears smaller IMHO. But I love this watch. Love how the bezel reflects light, especially at night.

You will NEVER see Rolex do a black dial with black hands. This would be a legibility nightmare.

I hope they modify the GMT hand to something a little more elegant and subdued and opt for something a less cumbersome and chunky.

I agree about the cumbersome and chunky, hence my 41mm case idea

You mean 41, not 40. They just increased the Sub from 40 to 41

I think a drop to 41 could be possible (40 no way) and that a ceramic bezel will never happen on a watch originally designed for caving.... it’s just too idiotic. But, I’d love to see a return to a style reminiscent of the McQueen.....

I put in my request for a white dial at the AD in early September and received the call before Thanksgiving. In truth it’s a little on the big side for my 6.75” wrist but I love it, the orange hand and lettering just murders me. I for one hope they change everything about it in 2021.

Explorer II 50th Anniversary 2021?

I have posted similar topics over the past few years. My guess:
1. Remains at 42mm
2. 3287 movement (70hrs power reserve)
3. Glidelock clasp on current all-brushed oyster bracelet.
4. Keeps white and black dials, but (at least my hope) black gets 1655 dial with SS bezel, but white keeps current dial with black cerachrome bezel.
5. Trip-lock crown

Number 4 won’t happen, but I can wish.

They will implement something green in it. considering the hit that green dial / bezel has had on all their releases.

People keep hoping that Rolex will reduce size to 40mm and I find it funny. First Rolex has been increasing size all over and even OP 39 is increase to OP 41 which is a dress watch. Explorer II is proper sports watch and 42mm is not even big size and sits perfectly fine between Sub41 and SD43. Secondly Explorer II at 40mm wasn't a big seller and now suddenly everyone wants they go back to 40mm. Lol. Folks want only which is discontinued, nothing more.

Didn't they decrease sizes from the DJ2?

Ask Rolex ..DJ II was 41mm and DJ 41 is 41mm.

They adjusted the case to make it look more dressy esp with jubilee instead of sporty look of DJ II. They did same for DD40 but the audience is different for DJ/DD more of dress watch to a sports watch. Datejust is Rolex's bread and butter and they'll adjust it but I don't see sports watch size reduction nor the need for it.

The Daytona is a pretty good tool watch, too, and that has many PM iterations.

Good, clean fun, my friend!
I’ll be eager to see what they do. The 40mm Polar was my first Rolex. Special place in my heart.

i guess little modifications will be introduced to the current expy 2 models. adding a precious metal like gold (yellow/ white) might happen. i think 42mm remains. ceramic besel is unlikely coz expy 2 will become quite similar to current GMT ceramic besel

Howdy,

I used to think Rolex would do a redesign of this for the 50th Anniversary but now, aside from a movement upgrade, I am not convinced they would change anything.

If I had to guess, you may get a green 24 hour hand, on a cream colored dial, with white gold hands and markers.

Regardless it remains my favorite model of all time, and is the watch that started it all for me!

Take care,

Ruddiger

It's not the 42mm face that's the problem, it's the 50mm lugs. 2" flat across the top of anyone's wrist is a big ask. I used to secretly wish for an upgrade to come along to make a 216570 for 16710 trade more feasible, but after a year with this unit 5 digits feel too gossamer.

Yeah, I could see the lug to lug distance shortened by 1mm on each side, which with some slightly different contouring allows for a wider bracelet (a la 126610 just released).

Hard to imagine an Explorer 2 with green, but I suppose it wouldn't surprise me. I like the orange 24 hour hand. Don't want to see a ceramic bezel on this model. In fact is there a coating that could be applied to the current bezel that improves scratch resistance (not that I care that much about it), in the name of "advancement"?

Could see dark rhodium dial for this model, as commemorative. Or some other new color addition (whether on 24 hour hand, text on the dial, 24 hr markers on bezel, etc).

New movement seems to be a given.

For what it’s worth.... I visited my AD today and brought up this subject, they stated Rolex would probably keep it at 42, to fill a niche of a 42 MM watch. The only other is the SkyDweller, which is twice the price. They have 40, 41, 42, 43 and even a 44, if they reduced it to 41, that would leave only the Sky as a 42MM watch and it is quite expensive.

I guess it makes sense, anyway, that’s what they said.

Ahh, more predictions. I say New movement only. I know I've said this before, I'm not a fan of the ceramic bezel cures all crowd and it doesn't fit the dna of the Expll so I'd bet that never happens however if it does that's fine by me. It will make me cherish mine even more. One thing that actually wouldn't surprise me as much, after seeing the mock up would be a TT version after seeing the direction Rolex took with the Sea Dweller to attract more buyers who go for bling on their 'Tool Watches' these days...
