The Explorer without a doubt.Seiko are pumping out so many Limited
editions it is getting ridiculous.If you want a GS get a used one for a big
big discount,they do not hold a good price.

I wouldn’t personally. To me the Rolex is a much nicer watch that will age better over time and retain the value a bit better.

May sound silly, but totally agree. There’s something pretty irritating about them to me personally. I believe they are a bit smug and believe they are more relevant in a hobby that existed long before them than they truly are. Now with them co branding and putting their name on everything that I feel they should leave well enough alone. Especially as a company that reviews things, and now can’t say anything bad about anything or they risk not getting a deal on co-branding that brands stuff.

Definitely keep the Explorer.

They’re stunning watches. A sports watch without being oversized, classic shape, classic dial, probably about the best “every day” Rolex out there, and getting progressively harder to obtain.

I wouldn’t sell an Explorer if I had a truckload of different watches to choose from, and I definitely wouldn’t sell it if I had a Sub as well. I think they’re almost a perfect pairing.

The GS is o.k. I can’t fault the standard of watchmaking, but there are things about it that make it an office watch rather than a tool watch for me. I don’t like these “brandings” either. They don’t add anything to the watch, and in the long term, when most people have forgotten who “hodinkee” were, will probably detract from the value.

When you consider that you can get a GS much more easily, I’d keep and enjoy what you have, and add a GS at a later date!

That way you end up with all three eventually!

I wouldn’t either. I watched them years ago and slowly became turned off by them. Though honestly, I don’t think I would buy a piece cobranded by anyone.

I appreciate anything co-branded even as I believe the explorers are A+. In a world where co-branding is uncommon, Who’s to say you are not getting the next Khanjar or Tiffany from a marquis publisher?

unless you need the extra cash, i would not sell the explorer for that GS. maybe for another GS, but it would have to be special enough to replace your first luxury watch.

Points:

A. You wear the watch that YOU like, use, enjoy etc. If it’s a Rolex or a Timex, doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about it.

B. If you are asking for opinions, and you only able to keep one watch, I would keep the Explorer. The GS is a great watch, but (again IMO) it’s not the level of a Rolex.

I have the explorer, it was my first nice watch. I have a sentimental bias, but I still think it is the perfect watch and I would not let it go easily.

If you adore the watch I would say hold onto it.

There will be more GS available in the future, so unless this particular one keeps you up at night and you can’t imagine missing this chance, then I think best to enjoy your explorer and sub and wait for another time that better suits your finances to bring a GS on board too.

Follow your heart of course! We all love the Explorer but there’s nothing sacred about it haha.

For my part, I used to have several Grand Seikos and still have one which was a gift from my ex-wife, simple hand-wound with a cream dial. It’s gorgeous, hands down. The quality is superb. That GMT is stunning! If you get it I’d love to see pics.

I have both. The GS dial is truly stunning, but it’s not an everyday watch. You will regret selling the explorer.

If you can’t afford both, keep the explorer and snag the GS used once everyone forgets it was ever an LE. The fact it’s still in stock at Hodinkee is strong evidence it won’t hold value long term.
