Thanks, appreciate that (though no need to make special call/trip; it's a curiosity for me at the moment). Ideally, if I went last-gen route I'd locate a white dial with either the lume sticks or black outlined 3-6-9 Explorer dial.

Love to see some side by side photos at a longer distance…… preferably on wrist or a watch roll with a longer lens. I’m loving the iPhone shots but I suspect they are making the watch present larger than it really is.
I’m not sure when I will get to try one on my own wrist so I’m living through you guys these days

No problem at all Matt. I totally get that. When you are hot after a watch, pictures on here are invaluable. The more the better. I'll get a bunch today and post them.

I can say that it's noticeably smaller, but I think if I were wearing it every day I would adjust to the new size pretty quickly. One thing that jumped out at me, is the glossy dial makes it look flashier overall because combined with the highly polished bezel, that's a lot of gloss going on.

Thanks so much for the kind words gents! I love having the father/son duo. If he takes care of it, he can get a 50+ year run on it. Some of my favorite posts on the forum are the guys who have worn the same watch for several decades.

I'm with you on the 36 vs 39. They are both fantastic, but I couldn't say definitively which is better unless I wore the 36 for a few months. Just trying it on I think it would be dang near perfect, but so is the 39. Unless you have an unusually large wrist, i think the 36 might be slightly better, but it's very close.

My son is 16 and I'm thinking we'll give it to him in his early 20's for some sort of life accomplishment; graduating college, starting a company or even a promotion in the military if he follows his old man's lead on that one. I suspect the next few years will be harder for me than it will be for him. He's pretty into all things Apple, so his Apple watch is fine for now.

Thanks. I just noticed another subtle difference between them. The 5 minute/second markers on the 39mm version are quite bold. They are not bolded on the 36mm version.

Ha! I wish I could be happy with an Apple Watch! Next time you have both the explorers out would you mind taking a side by side picture of the bracelets and clasps? Appreciate it!

Interesting. I was waiting since Sept for the 39mm Explorer (after waiting for the 39mm OP white dial with no success)... and then discontinued. So I changed my mindset to be open about the 36mm, and after seeing pictures, was really excited about the idea. Then I tried on the 36mm Tudor BB yesterday, and it looked tiny... I could do it, but I'd always be thinking about how small it is.

That being said I have a vintage Seiko at 36mm and I love it.

I guess I really need to try on the 36mm Explorer, then I'll know. If it doesn't work out, I'm going for the smooth bezel DJ41 and calling it a day.

Never tried the Tudor but two things I’d be cognizant of:

1. Bracelet is wider. While that gives the entire apparatus more wrist presence, the watch itself is a smaller portion of it and will wear proportionally smaller.

2. Bezel looks a bit thicker. All else equal wider bezel means smaller face.

Definitely worth trying in though!

Thank you for the side by side pics-sure theres others on the net, but yours give the best side by side comparison on the wrist.

The 214270 looks huge next to the 124270 imo which makes my mind up 100%. I'll stick with my 214270 that already wears small as is. I like 40-42's. Massive difference after wearing my SkyD for a bit then going down to a 214270. Well alot of mine seem small afterwards lol. Including my Daytonas.

But huge congrats to get back to back Explorer's as I'm definitely not hating. You have a great A D relationship going. Congrats!!

I suspect Im going to love everything about the new explorer except its size on My wrist..... it does indeed look fantastic on yours.


Im very much prepared for it to look small on my wrist, the difference in 3mm is astounding to me.

I'm currently alternating between my 44mm diver and a 36mm homage/ alpha explorer that I bought 4 years ago in an attempt to "get used to the size" back when I was chasing down a vintage 36mm explorer.... its incredibly comfortable on wrist but it does feel like I'm wearing my sons watch overtime I put it on ( i gave it to him once i bought my MKII explorer.


Love the feel, doubts about the look but very much on board with all the proportions and upgrades.

True, that's exactly what I was thinking, the bezel on the BB36 is wider, thus a smaller dial.
