It is, I restore bikes and helmets from late 60's early 70's.

Just as a side note on Shelby. He and Ken Miles also built the first two Sunbeam Tiger prototypes back in the mid 60's. The Tiger was originally an Alpine body with a small block Ford 260 and later 289 v8 shoehorned in. He wanted to build them at Shelby American but the Brits were somewhat concerned with his closeness to Ford at the time. They ended up giving him a royalty for every Tiger sold. Great little cars.

Incredible thread. I’ve been a keen fan since my dad introduced to Le Mans and The Great Escape. I’ve been more into his Porsches, as my dad regularly restored 356s and early 911s. I’ve always had a soft spot for his McQueen’s green 911S. So understated, yet magical in its details and performance. Just like a nice four digit Rolex. McQueen just got it.

Talk about deja-vous!!! My 5512 just came FedEx today and I was all ready to write a post about how this watch SHOULD be the real "Steve McQueen" Watch!!

Luckily, I found this thread before I made a fool of myself and stepped on your awesome post!!

Anyway, here are a couple of pics in my library of the "King of Cool" 5512 history!!

My dad rode a Sachs in the early 1950s when he did an apprenticeship as a motorcycle mechanic in Nürnberg.

CHERs 1968 - 5513 (which she bought in the UK and gave to her much loved step-dad) and photograph it.

Sonny and Cher were big friends of Steve McQueen, and would be round his (and driving his cars), I noted from various pictures.

It's inscribed weirdly from CHER to Dad xx (most normal people put to DAD with love xxxx). Guess that is what signing autographs for 20 yrs does to you !

Sadly it's got a Submariner above depth rating service dial, but it truly doesn't matter as it's the ownership history that interesting and how I got it, and a funeral she didn't attend, angry relatives, correspondence with her now dead agent, and a UK Children in Need charity dichotomy I have related to it !

Had a little passenger ride in his browny burgundy 250 Lusso (that his wife bought him) at the Goodwood Festival of Speed a few years back - lovely jubbly !

The Lost Mqueen film (narrated by David Letterman) on Netflix, is a good watch in amazing colour footage, if anybody here has not seen it.

Ref your question in 3rd paragraph - in this podcast embedded in link below (from minute 21) Jake Ehrlich talks about Italian magazines first propogating the myth, and that he interviewed Steve's wife and son who confirmed not an Exp2.

There was a photo the Italian magazine had used I recall, where the whole bezel insert was reflecting light and hence they made the incorrect assumption. I've tried to find the photo but failed to locate it.

Also, according to Paul Altieri 'both Jean Claude Killy and Steve McQueen had their names associated with the watch in numerous advertisements, however Steve McQueen never actually wore the ref. 1655'

Me too - love strokers - Those clip-ons are lower than a snakes belly - fabulous stuff.

I had a road registered Rob North KH750 with similarly low clip-ons and rear sets as per this mere replica ! Wish I still had it...
