Congrats to Lia Block USA for being just 7/10'ths off the pace of very experienced single seater drivers during FP1 of F1 Academy.

This is her first ride at this level.

Daughter of legendary Ken Block who has bounced back from her Dad's untimely death a little over a year ago. Raced for the family team in Rally, also did Extreme E Off-road & Nitrocross last season. Now she will compete in F1 Academy driving for ART Grand Prix and is in the Williams Driver Academy.

That’s awesome to hear. I had seen some stuff about Pikes Peak after his passing but wasn’t aware of the F1 Academy.

Yes sir... and the drivers/car don't even have to pass the 'Broomstick Test'. There was much risk, and only ~10 races a year. The attrition rate during race due to mechanical reliability was also quite challenging. It was a magical time, when racing was at the forefront and F1 was a sport for the truly brave.

The difference between Max and the others is far more due to Max than it is the Red Bull car. He avoids driving mistakes at a much higher rate than the others. He drives the more efficient racing line every lap, and he avoids oversteer most of the time. He simply has better racing judgement.
Hmmm... I remember a few years ago people said that about Lewis, that he was pure talent and the car had very little to do with it. Now he struggles to even beat his teammate. I'm not saying you're wrong. Max may very well be running on pure talent. It's just very interesting how things change over the years. Max certainly does things with his car that Perez could never dream of doing.

"11th on the grid with less than 60 minutes in the current chassis" Bearman.

That's who...

He's in F2 Series so was handy. Just goes to show - be ever ready to help the team.

Good luck for SAI in surgery.

Done, great job

But, I still don't understand why Norris didn't get the punishment he deserved, nor why Perez for a team mistake. However, this time at least none of them mattered.

Thanks!

Thus, it is already clear that both decisions were correct, morover, in the case of Perez, they were particularly lenient. On the other hand, I think it would be worth investigating why NOR's transponder did not indicate the clearly visible and undoubtedly happened jump start.

I almost forgot to mention Haas' brilliant strategy! For the sake of the team, MAG's race was sacrificed to build enough distance between him and HUL to let him keep his position even after the pitstop. It was a fantastic team effort, a bit like how SAI won a race last year. Sometimes the secret to success is not speeding, but slowing down the others. I really liked this! :)

Anyway, at first I wondered why they didn't go to soft tires because then they could have finished ahead? First I thought they wanted to make sure they got at least one point, which means huge $$ for them. That's the reason why I also wondered why ALO didn't get softs either. But when I saw that HAM and NOR couldn't even get enough close to BEA on the softs, it became clear that these tires didn't work well on this track. Let's say, this was already shown at the beginning of the competition, but maybe it wasn't so spectacular at the time, because that time not the top pilots put this tire on.

I watched the race replayed on F1 TV at my daughter and son-in-law's house. I like DC but the other commentators leave a lot of room for improvement. They continued to drone on, every lap, for 17 laps about how Norris deserved a 5 second penalty for his "jump start".

When I got home, I turned on my recording of Sky's presentation of the race I recorded on ESPN. I watched the first 17 laps of coverage and Crofty and Co mentioned it exactly twice.

Excellent point, F1 desperately needs a stream with minimal, yet quality, commentary. I've enquired about one with no commentary, no luck.

. It's like They endlessly talk just so they can hear their own voices. And some of the commentary really is not relevant at all. Or such guessing and guess work that it's laughable or at least reduces the true quality of the F1 Games, which, as we know is considered by many to be top shelf as the best in the world. Even with its limitations and again, they keep droning on and on. And eventually you get tired of listening to it because it just doesn't stop and keeps going I'm going and going and they just never shut up.

hope that makes sense.

Broadcaster opinions aside, it is easy to understand everyone's opinion when they see movement with their own eyes.

There is such a history of anticipatory jumping of the red lights extinguishing that F1 decided to use transponders. But even those have quirks.

If anyone has autocrossed they know a few inches getting a start advantage can make a thousandth's of a second difference.

Anyway...for the avoidance of doubt, here is what the F1 rule book says on this point.

48) INCORRECT STARTING LOCATION
48.1 Any of the penalties under Articles 54.3a), 54.3b), or 54.3c) will be imposed on any driver who
is judged to have:
a) Moved before the start signal is given, such judgement being made by an FIA approved and supplied transponder fitted to each car, or;
b) Positioned his car on the starting grid in such a way that the transponder is unable to
detect the moment at which the car first moved from its grid position after the start signal is given, or;
c) Any part of the contact patch of its front tyres outside of the lines (front and sides) at the time of the Start signal.

The key consideration is if the tire's contact patch moves from its grid position. That is, ahead of the painted front line of the grid spot.

So, while we agree we saw movement, the transponder data showed NOR didn't move out of his grid spot, he then briefly stopped, and then the lights went out.

These are difficult calls especially when we work with support series who don't have all the technology. If you think the start is interesting, try judging restarts

This is what I get with my cable subscription. ESPN simply defaults to the Sky feed and it is great. My daughter doesn't have cable, so it's my F1 TV subscription while at her place.

I found this video:

At 0:16 we can see that NOR stopped after the jumpstart, so he ended up starting later than the others. This is true. However, in this picture we can also see that his front wheels were already behind the grid! It follows that he may have started on time, but he could not have started from where he did. The problem was not with the time, but with the actual starting place.

Of course, I know this does not matters at all by the rules. But in my opinion, in this case another question arises: How could it be possible that the transponder did not signaled this clearly visible infridgement?
