Vintage Tudor Submariners Show Em

This one from a retired US Navy diver, whose career and stories are a national treasure. I met him at a car dealership while we were both waiting on our vehicles to be serviced. Since I was also retired Navy, I struck up a conversation with him as he was wearing a Navy ball cap. Only then did I notice him wearing what I thought was a Rolex submariner.

His Tudor submariner was service issued and was worn for every dive over his 30 year career, including in Vietnam during the war.

Here is his watch. The owner is CWO4 John Whitefield. I salute him for his tremendous service.

Yes, that is a Timex Velcro strap.

I wish I could. It’s not mine. Definitely loaded with crud. I told John that I’d be happy to help his family find it a great home when the time comes. He’s getting up there in years, and his health has been poorly. Navy guys can talk to each other like that.

I asked him to write down his exploits with that watch from Vietnam to diving off Alaska. He said he would, but I didn’t want his story to go untold, so I’ve started to record Zoom sessions where I ask him questions and get him talking about his life and Navy career. He says he doesn’t go anywhere without that watch; it’s been there for everything. Never polished, just smoothed a bit through a lot of wear ... it’s intended purpose.

It’s bittersweet for me as my father (his official Dive School photo below), God rest his soul, was also a Navy diver.

I remember as a kid both his old service issued Tudor sub and Rolex 5513 (purchased at Guam PX) lying abandoned and partially broken in the junk drawer at home in Michigan. My parents divorced when I was 15, so my Dad took them with him. Years later, a few months before my Naval Academy graduation, my Dad asked what I wanted for a commissioning gift. I told him “your Rolex Submariner”. He said, “that old thing, you don’t want it - it hasn’t worked in 20 years so I traded them both for a side of beef a few years back.”

Talk about deflation...

I don’t want that to happen to John’s watch, and perhaps his family doesn’t know it’s value.

Ahhhh - I thought you had gotten it from him based on previous conversations. I wish for two things watch wise, first I could get my dad's casio (he could care less for a Rolex) and two, go back to the PX in Germany in the mid 80s with a few grand .

While on the regrets train, I wish I had purchased several Rolex watches (especially 5513, 1665 and 6263 silver Big Red) readily available at military discounts and no tax at the USNA midshipman store while I was there ‘81-85. They had all SS models at what I thought were ridiculous prices, and I was right but on the low side. Kick myself every time I let my mind wander back to spending money on beer, gas, stereo equipment, albums, etc. instead of something I could wear with massive future upside.

Why in the heck didn’t my Dad, who attended a few events and saw them there in the display case, fleet instructors or professors not advise us to scrape together enough money to at least buy one to wear and one to tuck away.

Watch this video. This guy was given great advise by his Sargent to buy a Rolex before he left the service. Wish someone had whispered that in my ear.
