Solar, Actually there would have been no National Geographic ADs for the White or Black Face Explorer IIs in the 1970s, as the Explorer IIs in their current form where not introduced until 1985 and availiable to the public until 1986.

In the 1970s there was the older style Explorer II with the Maxi Dial, square hour and minute hands and extra Large Orange 24 hour hand. The old style was primarily for caving, as the 24 hour hand was in sync with the Regular hands. No way to adjust for a different time zone. All the orange hand did was tell you the time in military 24 hour time.

Understood. I guess 70s was the wrong decade in my post. I seem to only recall a black dial from those ads, which is why the black dial Exp II was always in my mind's eye as the quintessential Rolex, so I guess their marketing worked on me..... What stood out for me to my memory was that the crown had crown guards, which was very unusual to my eye at that time. The watch just looked so different from the plain flat discs that my dad and uncles wore at the time..........the watch would always be at the bottom of the page with a great action shot of some intrepid explorer (no pun intended) braving the top of a mountain, very cool.
