The SD is just an update to the former with parts from other recent releases. Putting new rims on a late model car doesn't make it new. If they were going to bring it back, they should have made it stand out more with a matte ceramic bezel and matte dial.

The wider lugs suit this model spot on, not the Sub C though. Going to get a new SD, flip the Sub C for a older style Sub or Pepsi GMT!!!!

I doubt it will have that much affect. If they had made it bigger, say 42mm, I would agree. With it being the same diameter as the SubC it won't appeal to the segment that wants a larger Sub.

I think from a product roadmap placement, this is a brilliant move by Rolex. At 40mm without a cyclops, they will cannibalize SubC and SubC date sales for a higher ASP much more than they will affect DSSD sales. That's a great tradeoff when the new SD won't cost that much more to make. And most likely they'll take more SubC sales than SubC Date since most people want the cyclops since it's one of Rolex's signature features. If they had made it 42mm, then I think they would have had more of an effect on DSSD sales.

I'm happy for all of those who were hoping to see this model unveiled. For me, I'm just thrilled that Rolex did not come out with a brand new Sub Date c. I just got mine in December and I have been thinking about Basel everyday...

I too don't see a HUGE difference in the new SD compared to the current sub, but once some comparison shots come out I would love to take a look. As of right now, I too think it may have been a mistake to go 40mm... I can tell you one thing KEN called this one with extreme certainty....

Absolutely agree. Personally I love the SDDS and wouldn't give it up for what is nothing more than a tribute act IMO. The SD set records and was laid to rest but there has long since been a new sherif in town and Rolex should have left it that way.
I get why people don't like the SDDS albeit mainly people with smaller wrists and to be fair a thinner 42mm model would have surely swayed people but for me this new model merely threatens the great sub market not the deepest watch in the world- Long live the Deepsea!

That's right Gus, it's the same finish as used on the black dial Exp II 42 mm
Not a true flat matte, it has a slight sheen to it. The Exp II dial even looks brownish in some light conditions

I really like the new SD4000, it's a lot better than the old one. A little brother for the Deepsea will please a lot of people.

I'm not sure I understand people complaining that it is too similar to the sub - they always were similar - to the untrained eye they are the same, just the cyclops is missing.

Does anyone know the thickness?

BUUUUUT if we're gonna nitpick, some AR on the underside of the crystal would have enhanced the differences between the Sub-C dial and this even more.

I can't "afford" this just yet, but as soon as I can I will be all over it.

I like this watch, should be a good seller. Never cared for the DSSD.
