The day/night bezel is def not a fad. Perhaps in the future Rolex will release another color combination and the "hype" will shift to the new model... and then the price of the discontinued BLNR will skyrocket !

Definitely not a fad ... A gorgeous rendering of a GMT
with a bicolor bezel that truly represent Day and Night distinguishing the difference effectively between am & pm. Going to be around for awhile... |

Indeed, I'd buy that - as for the BLNR, how can classic colors in a classic watch be a fad? Beyond me, even if I don't particularly like the black and blue contrast personally. I'm an LN owner from back when that was the only choice. So can't claim I chose that over the BLNR. No less happy with it though and the best is I get to have green lume to match my green hand.

Not a fad. GMTs have always had day/night colours. The popularity might die down a touch if another two colour option becomes available though. Don't hear much about the Coke C lately. Have people given up on that dream??

Not a fad... I've had both. While both are beautiful watches, the BLNR has a charm to it you just don't get with the all black.

I wouldn't call the BLNR a 'fad', but it probably has been over-hyped somewhat.
I tried both the LN and the BLNR numerous times before I settled on the LN. As I'm fortunate enough to own a Pepsi, Coke and LN from the 16710 series, I already knew that for a day to day GMT the LN was the way to go for me. The black Bezel gives the watch a classic look I feel which the BLNR just didn't capture to my eye in the same way the multi coloured bezels of the previous models did. Will the BLNR be a future classic? Maybe. Maybe not. Only time will tell. As for the bracelet, I changed my GMT bracelet to the sub bracelet right away. Mostly because I didn't like the PCL's on my GMT, (they're fine on my datejust), plus it has the added convenience of the glidelock clasp, which, regardless of what's been said above, is a big improvement over the simple easylink. I don't own a sub and because I have numerous GMT's, likely never will, but the sub bracelet is a masterpiece of engineering form and function in every way, I just wish the clasp cover was a bit more subtle and smaller in size. |

Not necessarily. I think a major thing WIS' forget is that as a percentage of watch buyers they are a minority. While there are many people who are WIS', and even more who are enthusiasts (love the brand, but not necessarily WIS), there are even more who are either new buyers or buyers of luxury goods. They care about the brand and its history, but not to the point of knowing what a Pepsi is or what the difference between an oyster, Jubilee and presidential bracelet is. Those are the vast majority of buyers, and their tastes are very personal and based on a sliding scale between taste and purchasing power.
Thus, if a Coke (or a Pepsi) in SS came out, there would be a definite uptick in purchases of the Coke (Pepsi) by WIS and enthusiasts. There is simply too much history for any WIS to not at least consider buying a SS Coke/Pepsi. But for the majority Rolex buyer ...the buyer would evaluate the SSc Coke, the SSc Pepsi, and the BLNR ...equally! It would boil down purely to (again) taste and purchasing power (in this case more like taste and availability, since Rolex would not be cranking out bushels of any of the three pieces). The BLNR would not be 'dead.' It would just be a model that most WIS would place below a SSc Coke/Pepsi due to it having a newer legacy/pedigree, but one that would be equally evaluated by the vast majority of Rolex buyers. In the same way that the Submariner Hulk has remained static strength since it (and the BLNR) came out. |
