I know the consensus is generally "wear it and enjoy it" but just to play devil's advocate, check out the latest Talking Watches with Keegan Allen on Hodinkee. He has his dad's Tag Heuer 2000, which was worn fishing and to the beach for several decades. It definitely looks like it, too. I like that aesthetic, but if you're super active and you don't like that look, that would be the reason. If you have a rotation and only splash around in the pool for a few minutes, then this would not apply.

I got a late start as a Rolex / luxury owner. 55. As such I feel I have a lot of catching up to do. For example when I read about some who wear a beater while on vacation, I think I’m just opposite. Vacations are fun. And I want at a minimum my GMT on my wrist on vacations. After all I have a lot of catching up to do.

Another thing is growth. My native instinct with nice things is to keep them perfect. Even not so nice things. That’s how I’m wired. With my new watches I’m wearing them all every chance I get knowing they are going to get a few knocks. But I’m wearing them anyway. Growth. Life is short. And I have a lot of catching up to do.

PS I don’t think most luxury goods are meant to be bought with the hope of appreciating in value. That aspect of Rolex ownership seems to be displacing a lot of the enjoyment.

I bought my first Rolex in 1985 (see sig) and still have it. I wore it everywhere, including all the TRF no-nos -- after work to the gym, working out, in sauna, steam room, whirlpool, playing tennis, occasionally running or playing golf. It was fine.

I got my Daytona at the end of 2016. I wear it virtually every day, and do take it off for exercise/running/playing tennis. But I wear it 90% of most days and enjoy the heck out of it.

I am, like a lot of folks here, careful with my stuff. Friends make fun of me for where I park my car. But I enjoy my stuff. Here's a picture of me with my watch on the beach this winter. If I was getting covered in sand by my kids (which I don't have), I wouldn't wear it. But walking the beach or lying on a blanket? Heck yeah!

If you don't feel comfortable leaving your watch behind in the summer place, maybe just find a good hiding spot for it, unless you want to insure it or get a safe. If you find you, for whatever reason, can't enjoy your stuff because you are concerned about its welfare, you have to decide if you get enough pleasure out of just knowing you own it. If not, sell it.

I wear my Rolex as often as I can when I go out but I leave them at home if I know I'm running some errands to somewhere I don't feel comfortable like a bad neighborhood.

If I wasn’t going to wear my watches - I’d rather just not have any of them. I usually always travel with 3.

And they are all insured.

before I bought my first Rolex, I don't think I can recall ever dinging a watch. They got dinged like all watches do, but it just never penetrated my awareness. Now I am waaaay more aware of every knock, ding, scrape and spill. Every one irritates me; like when the buckle of the safety belt in the car plinks the case as it zips by when I unlock the belt. I have no solution to this other than to live with the annoyance. I'd sell them and collect Pokemon crap before I hid them away.

It's true that the watch was meant to be worn and can take pretty much whatever you can throw at it. It's also true that many owners here wouldn't think twice about wearing theirs at the beach, on vacation, gardening, etc. That said, it's your watch and you get to decide appropriate times to wear it. If building sand castles with your kids on the beach has you worrying about your watch then wear something else. Unless you spend most of your life on vacation there are far more times to enjoy your expensive watches than not.

I dont agree that "you shouldn't have bought it" and you "shouldn't worry about it". I think you should do what makes you most comfortable and allows you the most enjoyment during these all too infrequent moments.

In 30 years mechanical watches will most likely be pocket watch status with the way technology is going. Kids are already losing interest in watches, I can't imagine how it will be in 30 years.

I wear my gold Rolex every single day and take it everywhere I go. Bought it to enjoy it. :)

Only time I take it off is sleep, shower and if working on my bikes or cars.

After a year it still looks great!

Geez, I'm really sorry about that. It's too late to edit. I wasn't even honestly thinking about them in that context. I had originally started posting pics of a bunch of various expensive tools, from pens to hammers, but I edited it down to this one, thinking it would be most relatable, you know, in the adventure/camping sense, not in the violence sense. My bad. I haven't read the rules in many years, so maybe I should again. I don't want that post to be taken out of context.

Nothing wrong wearing an expensive watch daily for everything, I used to do that with my Omega Planet Ocean for about 10 years, I could have done that with any of my Rolex but decided not to since I have many watches not just Rolex. My Omega got more tear and wear, serviced but it's all good and you have a higher risk of losing, these are facts of life just like your car or your body.

Nowady I enjoy wearing my Seiko Turtle PADI as my daily driver not because it's inexpensive but I really enjoy wearing such a beautiful comfortable iconic watch for so little money.

I don’t have a rolex. But I wear a Tag Heuer CAZ2012 with pretty much everything that I do. Construction site at my home. Mining for stone and stockpiling for future landscaping. Swimming in an ocean and playing on the beach. Working out in the gym.
It is never safer than when it is on my wrist.
It is my most expensive watch that I am willing to pay for and I am sleeping comfortably without worrying about damaging it.

I imagine in five to six years when I pay off my mortgage and reward myself with a rolex that I will treat that in the same manner. The price of the watch is all relative!

I work hard for what I can afford, and I fully enjoy what my hard work is spent on. To the OP, that decision is for my life. You are the one who needs to make the decision for whats best for you. Best of luck, man.

Why can't you wear a Daytona to the beach?? Make sure everything is screwed down and have at it. Granted, I have a Sub, but beach days are my favorite times to have my watch on. Wear it and enjoy it. Otherwise no point in owning it.

Just ask yourself “is the watch too good to be worn by me?”
If you can say NO (I hope you do) then just wear it use it scratch it whatever as it’s your watch so you deserve to wear it. :)

As I wrote on another thread no material things (regardless of price) is too good to be used. Rolex is a mass produced product that’s luckily of high quality so use it anywhere and you should be fine. Worst case scenario that you break it just get it serviced.

took all of my watches on vacation, to the beach, snorkeling etc...never had an issue, dont worry about it leave it on your wrist and enjoy it!

embrace the scuffs, scratches, dents, i would rather see a well loved well worn watch that has been enjoyed then a minty safe queen


rolex are the most robust and reliable watches out there, heck I even took my royal oaks snorkeling!
