its ages better than any metal (at least in its pure form). Its the most non reactive of all metals.

Its softer yes, but it would "age" better

This should be the closing remarks of this thread... Beautiful collection OP!

FYI- I am not a yellow gold fan but those white gold watches are beautiful. Especially that blue Sub- Absolutely gorgeous watch. Only reason I got a two tone blue sub because WG was a bit out of range.. for now

Early in my watch collecting hobby I would go along with the statement of why would anyone buy a PM watch that looks like SS. But as I developed in the hobby I could actually tell the difference in the metals and once I owned one, then, I understood. I like the quote, "If you know what it is, you know." It applied and works for some of my watches and vehicles. It also helped that once I became more educated about the products and the history I appreciated those items more. It is easy to have a preference and just because you understand the difference you can still prefer the colored metals but those that prefer other metals are ok. Just a choice.

Some like the heft, some like the warmth of WG versus SS, others like the under-the-radar nature of WG.

At least that’s why I’ve read on here, anyway.

Not really imo, I buy pm but don’t care much for the Ss hot watches

No. It holds up surprisingly well. When you see all the threads folks here start that show their dented, dinged, scratched and damaged STAINLESS STEEL watches as opposed to full GOLD watches, what does that tell you?

Also, attracting attention to my wrist is the last thing on my mind wearing watches...but if someone happens to notice my watch and knows enough to understand it's a PM Rolex (unique dial/slightly different tone of WG vs SS), I can certainly appreciate a fellow WIS with respect.

Could tell you that SS watches are more popular than gold watches, could also tell you that people simply wear SS watches more often than gold even if they own both. Just my hypothesis.

I’ve caught scratches on every watch I owned but my DD40 had probably the least of any. Not cause it was gold, but because it was a special occasions watch.

Gold is softer than steel. I don’t think it will “age” any faster than steel, but it won’t resist scratches and dings as well as SS. I’m not saying it’s a big deal and I’m not saying gold Rolex’s don’t hold up well, just saying they are in fact softer than steel.

you are forgetting that AD's dont take stickers off PM watches since they aren't flippable. Gold is absolutely more durable compared to those unprotected SS scratch magnets

Absolutely. Rolex 18K is butter soft. Just rub it with a slightly dirty cloth and it will show. The flip side, I have found it easier to polish out with a Cape Cod cloth.

I’m head over heels with my “Smurf”. Since I purchased it back in February, it has barley seen the safe. The color is magnificent and the weight is very different than SS. I don’t like using the word “understated”, but I like that most people do not know that it’s gold. I think if I could keep only one, it would be my WG Smurf. And I have a few to choose from.

It all comes down to the idea of why you are buying a mechanical, luxury watch at all? They are all excessively expensive

10k, 20k, 50k it’s just extra levels of ridiculous to most people

I have several SS Rolexes, which I enjoyed. I also said why spend extra money for a WG or platinum Rolex when it looks very similar to SS. Then I had the opportunity to try on a pre-owned platinum DD40. I was immediately taken by the weight and heft of the watch, but it does not feel heavy or unbalanced. I promptly traded two popular SS Rolexes for this watch and have not looked back. I feel that I am having a “intimate conversation” with my watch daily, an experience I did not have with my other watches. I also enjoy that no one but me knows that I am wearing an expensive and less popular watch. For me, in the future, I will wait until I have the money to buy WG or platinum watches. It would be difficult to go back to SS.

Let me plagiarize a quotation: Wearing a White Gold Rolex is like wetting yourself wile wearing a dark-colored pair of pants. It gives you a warm feeling and nobody will probably notice.

Could it be the subconscious desire to wear something you know is significantly more expensive than the SS norm?

Absolutely! I don’t have one but i love the fact that most people would have no idea it’s a 30k+ watch. It’s very beautiful.
