For me 5.
Have:
Nice Sport:Patek 5726/1A-white
Rugged Sport: Rolex Exp II-white
AC: 5205G-013-blue
Mesmerizing: Zenith Chronomaster XXT Open Grand Date...love to gaze at the balance wheel skeletonized on the dial...amazing under-appreciated watch.
Want:
Patek 5711/1A blue dial...iconic dream watch...it is what I wanted when I stumbled upon a 5726/1a-white at an AD and took the opportunity to immediately purchase, that 6 years ago.

I've been thinking about this as well and the poster who mentioned collecting versus wearing has a good point. If collecting is the goal, then as many as one can afford. If meant for wearing, I think three is solid. Two watches that one wears often and perhaps one special watch. I'm at six watches and definitely debating which camp I want to be in. It's kinda like cars, .

currently, i'd rather think one needs N-1 watches, where N is the number of watches currently held. the problem is that this algorithm takes you down to zero pieces in finitely many steps:::)))) maybe the correct number of needed watches is max (N-1 and 5):::))))

I currently have a slightly redundant 5 watch collection. An Exp 1, Exp 2, 2 Nautilus, and an Aquanaut.

Also the type of person to by the same articles of clothing in different colors.

That’s my thinking, I’m currently at only one, my 15450. But I’m looking to get a speedmaster before i need to send this for service so that I have something to wear in the meantime. I’m okay with just having one watch, but if I had the opportunity I’d totally go up to 3 (15450, speedmaster, 5164A), but then at that point I’d have a hard time deciding what to wear, I like having something that I can just wear all the time
Big reason why I haven’t got the speedmaster yet is cause I know I’d never wear it cause it’s competing with the RO… I think that’s my biggest issue with having multiple watches, how do you decide what to wear? (especially for me that I like watches that are not very varied in style, no plans of getting a dress watch any time soon) I feel like I’d just always go with my best/favorite one.

Question for those that change watches often, does your wrist get used to the different weight of each watch quickly? I remember I felt weird for a day or two whenever I’ve upgraded my watch over the years (all of which I’ve worn 24/7)

I have had as many as 12 watches at once. I tend to pass watches in and out of my collection. However, over time I have found that there is a favorite that wears most of the time, so Why have the other ones?

Well this number now varies regularly but at the moment I have one primary, rugged watch, one beater and one dress watch.

The dress watch is always the same: my father’s 1962 omega constellation 18 karat gold with 18 karat gold Milanese bracelet.

The beater is my Tudor Pelagos LHD.

The day-to-day has varied significantly: 2 years ago it was originally in Audemars Piguet perpetual calendar Royal Oak. I flipped that for a white gold day date 40. This was followed by a platinum day date 40. I then changed it to the Patak Philippe 5960 annual calendar chronograph. Lastly, I have switched to the VC overseas blue face with multiple straps.

Such is the disease

The best number to reach is when you can wear your watch quite often.
I am at 7 actually and still looking for more.

I think 10 would be my max.

Sports
Dress
Travel

Everything else is gravy.

With fashion rules as they are, a Rolex gmt (or any Rolex on bracelet) can serve the purpose of all 3 but may not be as much fun.

So far the most convincing explanation for why I had gotten stuck at N=1 in the early 2000s...

Dammit, there's always a bug in the algorithm. Good catch... OK, let's ensure prudent 0 and 1 owners become insatiable double-fisted watch crack-heads too:

(N+2)^2 (squared) where N is the number currently held :-)

3 is the magic number for me.

- leather (dress) - FPJ CB
- rubber (sport) - PP 5167
- bracelet (both) - PP 5712

The reason I like 3 is it forces you to make tough decisions based on what you actually wear.

I have five, but four would do:

* Gold Rolex - I have two, a YG 218238 DDII and YG 116718 GMTII C
* Stainless Rolex sport watch - 116622 Rodium dial Yachty
* Cartier - I have a soft sport for Tanks and have the new (2018) 40mm stainless Santos
* Dress Patek - 5296r Calatrava on a Calatrava deployant

With all the changes over the last three decades, I have finally settled out.

Sports, travel time, dress, PC and 1 just because you can

Thoughts?
You're on the right track, but you've missed some things.

Sports/Casual:
Diver
Pilot
Chronograph

Travel:
GMT or dual-time

Calendar:
Perpetual or annual calendar

Dress:
Yellow gold on brown strap
Rose gold on brown strap
White metal on brown strap
Yellow gold on black strap
Rose gold on black strap
White metal on black strap

Mechanical Alarm:
Cricket, Memovox, or Advisor

So yeah, 12 ought to do.
