I got the email from Nick that my G&G MTO is ready. The BREXIT devaluation of the pound saved about $475 (US) on the completion payment.

Hopefully will have the shoes next week.

That was just the second payment on the two pair order. Had I ordered two months later I might have captured the favorable exchange rate on both payments. I was contemplating a Thorpe MTO today with that in mind (weighing the scolding I will get from the missus).

I recently bought my first pair of boots, Magnanni Marcelo and love them so far. I'd like to get a second pair, perhaps something a bit darker. Any suggestions?

With a budget like that and Brexit it might actually even give you the opportunity to purchase something from Gaziano and Girling. I would also look at something from Crockett and Jones. There would be a number of other brands as well but these are the two I would select from. I think even with Brexit Edward Green would be a bit more or I would highly recommend them as well. The Galway is an Icon and one of if not the best looking derby out there. Since your located in NY you could also ensure a good fit before ordering.

Out of price range a tad Dan, but do you know anything about Lobb's Alder boots?

To be honest there are a number of reasons why when it comes to boots and shoes Edward Green, Gaziano & Girling, and St Crispins just happen to appeal to me more with a few exceptions. For one I just like the way those three finish their shoes better and I find their designs speak to me more. Although John Lobb probably does museum better than anybody else it's not something That really speaks to me. About the only John Lobb offerings that really appeal to me are the Phillips II, City II, Williams II, and Chappel. At least these designs have yet to be ruined by their new chief designer.

I just took a look online and to be honest for that style of boot I would probably go with a different shoemaker. It's not a design I would typically associate with John Lobb.

Thanks Dan. I only saw the boot this week in plum museum calf. It's modeled after the '50's ski boot IIRC. Has a more rural look to it and seems to be intended to be a proper winter boot. But it's priced around $1800 without trees, which gets me an MTO Thorpe and a couple nice dinners out with the missus.

Viberg has actually done something of that nature in the past which have actually really appealed to me but which I have missed out on and better yet for much less.

Here's an example and they've done a few others in the past which were even nicer looking in my opinion. This one isn't necessarily in the color I would ideally go with and as I said they have done others in the past where the design was similar and slightly better looking in my opinion.

That is a proper winter boot. I have a couple similar from various makers.

I think the Thorpe is the next acquisition. It will be an MTO (MH71 last, storm welt, rubber sole). I'll have to give it some design thought before I choose the leather.

You may want consider another one in Kudu. I have a Thorpe in Arran Country Grain and Oak Kudu and I have to say as good as the Arran Country Grain looks the Oak Kudu is just that much better looking. I really think the texture gives it a bit of character. I know someone who was able to acquire one in Mountain Ram. At the time everybody was extremely jealous with a very few exceptions to include me. In fact at the time I commented the texture of Kudu was nicer. As it turns out when he received them even the owner was a bit disappointed.

The kudu does look great. I saw ostrich leg leather recently on a pair of western boots and it was quite impressive as well. Very reptilian, almost like lizard.

For me the good thing about Kudu is that it has a bit of character but yet it's still subtle.

Typically I'll wear a new pair of GWY about three times for about an hour each time in the house before wearing them for a whole day. This seems to work rather well for most new boots or shoes I own. That is except for the redwing boots that I own. Break in for these were quite a bit longer to say the least.
