Lots of cool Seiko and Orient divers. Start there and see how he does.
Save the Rolex for when he graduates University. Very age appropriate and he will always feel it is truly special as he will feel he actually earned it. |

If you want to give your son something special for his 13th birthday, as a father I can certainly understand the sentimentality. My son has enjoyed watches along with me for many years. I did the same with my father. I kept everything he gave me for those various landmarks in time- and when I turned 40, he presented me with an A Lange & Sohne Walter Lange limited in red gold. I wear it to the office each day and when I look at the watch I immediately think of my dad.
At 13 I wanted to give my son a nice watch and I discovered a "junior" line from Frederique Constant called "the Junior Chronograph". Very nice piece that is all stainless steel on bracelet with a quartz movement. It was not very expensive at all. He wears it everyday and loves it! |

No.
IMO, buying your children luxury items robs them of the joy that they could later experience by earning it themselves. |

Is it just me or do other people wonder if questions like this are even real? I hang out on IMDB and a running joke there is posting a thread asking if an obviously inappropriate film is suitable for a child. I guess I am just jaded.

It is a pretty non-sensical question, isn't it. Luxury watches for kids. Hardy-har-har. Watches for good grades? How about good grades because they're expected without a reward.

Depends on the kid, but probably no. If so, it would be an old used dj that could be obtained cheaply. When I was 13 I bought a watch from a soviet sailer (the wall had just come down) for 60 marks. I treasured it and moved on to a skagen. I guess you have to crawl before you can walk.... Jmo

No way. And no, it doesn't "depend on the kid". Let him earn it with his own money if he wants it so bad. Believe me, if he works like a dog in order to scrap together 2 grand to buy the watch himself, you can bet he'll appreciate and take care of it more than he would if it were just handed to him because he pointed and said "I want that". Perhaps I take a hard line on this since I'm originally from a very poor country, but seeing parents buy their kids luxury/status items pretty much lets me know why so many people end up having a massive sense of entitlement. Like others have said, what's next? What kind of car are you going to buy him? Are you going to buy a house for him when the time comes, too? Getting a kid an expensive status item like a Rolex won't teach them to appreciate the finer things, it will most likely teach them to expect the finer things to be given to them. I guess if you want to finance the kid's lifestyle from cradle to grave, that's fine.
And as a side note, you state that he has lost one watch, and his current watch is banged up. I think that answers your question better than anyone in this thread could. |

At that age, money should be put away for college. He can get a Rolex when it's time.

My 8 year old nephew is about to get my old TAG Heuer F1 chrono, and there are kids in his class with better watches than that. The rule he will follow is that it never comes off unless it's at home. Don't really care if he loses a TAG though, I was about to throw it in the trash before this.

sorry for the pun but, this has gotta be a wind up....
by all means buy him one, but please keep us posted on how long it took him to swap it for Pokemon cards or other kids stuff.... to some, it's just a watch but, a watch that should be respected & earnt all the same & i fail to see how a 12/13 year old boy can appreciate such an item.. probably better off getting him the latest copy of Playboy instead, he'll love that far more

Sorry...but this thread is almost as silly as the one about buying a rolex for a 7 year old.

Yeah mate, get him a new Rolex. Just make sure it's one you want, and tell him you'll look after it until he's old enough to appreciate the watch and not loose it.
Problemo solved. And you get a new watch. Pictures ASAP. Cheers |
