but i am going through something, somewhat, similar. ive been stuck trying to decide between a schumacher or the gp for a couple of weeks - much ummming and ahhing, trying to figure out which one will have longer term appeal and truly leaving me without wanting the one not chosen. it occurred to me today that, perhaps, the fact that neither is a slam dunk means that neither is the right one? a painful admission as either would be my first AP and i feel like i really want one |

Ill say this, the reason why the Grand Prix to me is the ultimate is because of my Supercar/racing addiction and passions... It feels as functional on the wrist as it does appearance wise , and like a tie in between modifying/tweaking a track car for the utmost performance/downforce/cooling etc It's significant to me, that's makes it so cool. |

for me, the draw of the GP is it definitely is more evocative of the whole racing/F1 thing that i am starting to get into...im not in a position to have a ferrari but i love the red and yellow on the dial (it evokes that vibe to me), i love the venting all over the watch, i love the use of lightweight, advanced materials (like racecars use), and i like how it is completely different than rolex and panerai in my collection. it almost defies being 'just' a watch and is an engineering jewel to me.
the main hesitation is the bezel....i wish it wasnt FC, both because of its wear properties and its uniformity in appearance with the FC case (i prefer a little variation between case and bezel texture, material, color, etc.). the combination of the bezel and case looks a little...vulgar or brutish to me?? at worst, i worry that the weight and carbon may make it seem a little toyish...but then i think my attraction to the design and dial will overcome that feeling but who really knows! the schumacher is a solid (great) 'watch' to me but stops there - its a watch...and i have quite a few of those. it also doesnt evok racing to me as much...wish there was some bezel venting (rb2, anyone) and maybe just a bit more color...but i feel its an extremely nice watch and probably the safer pick...but perhaps not the same passion evocation as the GP. at least, i think i will be able to see a schumacher in person this week...but not a GP. dont know if that makes any sense but glad to get it off my chest :) anyway, sorry for distraction roger! |

No distraction at all. It's a helpful debate I think. I think I'd like to add another moving part into the equation.
It sometimes happens that I am debating in my mind what to do and then the decision gets made for me because one of my friendly dealers presents me with a nice solution, perhaps to trade one of the pieces they know I am looking to get rid of, and perhaps also to help them get out of a piece they don't really want on their books. That solves the problem for me of disposal of an unwanted piece, but leads me to buy something that I don't really want......... Which is clearly not the right answer! And you get bored quickly, and the piece you have bought is quickly surplus to requirements and holds no interest. One thing's for sure, I am spending too much time thinking about watches, and need to do some work! I think the 26288 carbon/rose ROO tourbillon will be a pass for me. Some of the comments on here have helped me reach a decision that I think I had already made in my own mind. Thanks guys! |

As I've said before in other threads, it reminds me of racing formula cars and collecting diecast race cars from when I was a kid. The metallic look reminds me of metallic elements of the race car (frame, wheels, exhaust train, etc). The blacks and greys remind me of the speedometer and gunmetal grey color of my GT-R. The crown, pushers, and pusher housing reminds me of spoilers and exhaust outlets. The cermet reminds me of chrome. The rubber reminds me of interiors and tires. The dial reminds me of tire tread. Stars and flagging reminds me of decals/vinyl. Likewise the flagging of race flags. The hands of formula car body shape. To each their own I guess... |

Hit the nail on the head for me. The beauty to me is that it's full carbon, I have ceramic bezels... Borrrrringggggg
Full carbon is just endless character, it never looks the same in your eyes, in pictures, under lighting/shade etc I don't see much racing in the schumi either, and whatever I do see of it are the inspired cues already done from the Grand Prix, which is awesome in itself ... But for me GP is the end all be all, and I have over 20 watches at the moment... Some people tout "ohhh gold best option, gold always the best" I added two new gold AP's in the last two weeks and ... Okay cool, been there done that, now AP send me my damn Grand Prix back !!!!!!!!!! They are takin so long, but it will be so worth it In the end as far as these two are concerned, both winners, just different flavors. People blow the carbon bezel wear out of proportion as well Ps when I get it back at the end if the month , you're more than welcome to check it out. I take it you're in Florida as well? What part? Roger sorry for the thread jack as well however this has become one big awesome thread :) Quote:

No worries - I think the thread has taken on a life of its own, with multiple hijacks over the pages (how did Krell get a mention on an AP thread??!!). An interesting debate for sure.

Sometimes we get bored on something. I'm thinking to sell all my collection and just buy a tourbillon and 1 Rolex for daily.

Roger,
So sounds like your burned out on collecting. Perhaps you might find it more enjoyable to find ways to pass on your knowledge in how you became successful enough to be in the situation that you are in. Perhaps it will be rewarding to see your friends achieve similar things that perhaps they just haven't been able to yet. Sounds like You've developed a knowledge of Horology that comes from hands on experience. Just some ideas Last edited by newbieincali; 12 September 2013 at 06:15 PM.. Reason: Stupid spell check |

I was on the brink of doing just that a few months ago via my preferred AD, but then the store manager left and they've made no effort since to be anything like as helpful as he was, so I have really stopped using them. There's a collector I know of in Asia who has had some amazing customisations done by AP, I haven't seen the pieces, but I am told they are amazing. |

No Hamish, I don't have a 5270 - have been trying to do a deal on one for some time, but the supplier can't take my Platinum Novelty in as part of the deal sadly. |
