I've never heard anyone say that Tom Selleck or Chuck Yeager's GMT Pepsi looked small on their wrists or that the sub was so small on Steve McQueen or Sean Connery's wrists that they looked feminine. I'm not saying that the 40 cm is subtle. It's not. but I'm not using it in the place of a hammer to build decks either!

These big 40+ ones look uncomfortable to me. Sort of like wearing shoes several sizes too big.

Yeah, but it wears smaller than it looks.

I feel 36mm might be a bit small but 40mm works well in most cases for me

i use a 44mm Pam and a 42mm IWC but for me the 40mm size is still a classic men's watch size...small when compared to a panerai but still a decent masculine size for men to wear and far from being a girlie watch..i still enjoy wearing my 40mm sub and explorer 2..but that i cannot say to a junior sized datejust..

I can't do large anymore. My 41 DD2 is enough for me. All of the 40mm Sport pieces are great! 36mm for me only on the DD due to the wrist presence of the piece itself VS the size. I find larger pieces feel clumsy on my wrist. But to each their own.

I thought the same thing when I bought a 372 and AP Diver, then I picked up a 116718 and remember why I love 40mm!

I feel you, but I am willing to bet if you slap a 40 on in no time you will get over it. For me it's like driving an F-150 then switching to a compact like a Mustang feels different but you adapt to it. Good luck nice problem to have.

I went the other way - I came back to 40mm after flirting with 44 and 47 mm watches.
YMMV. |

Try a 36 mm Datejust and go back to 40mm and you are again happy.

Size is just about the most important thing to me in watches these days. Size and how they wear. I have made a couple of regrettable purchases, but at least I've learned what my preferences are. |

It's all about proportion isn't it? 40mm is as large as I'd ever want.

Well done Brian, and that is quite some change to your wrist. I have lost around 12kgs in the last few months and my wrists have gone down to about 7" from 7.25, so I favour slightly smaller watches now too. Still keeping my blue Steelfish tho.

Until all the world's new money becomes old money or broke, small and subtle watches will not return to be the mainstream in luxury watches.
