Is it safe to wear a Patek when getting a medal? What if the medal slips and hits the watch? Think she can fix it with scotch brite, a cape cod? Send it to an independent? Lose it to HSW for a year. ...?
Or perhaps just live with the mark?

I actually watched the whole ceremony. It was quite extraordinary. Obama read a short bio about each recipient. Here's part of what he said about Ellen:

It’s easy to forget now, when we’ve come so far, where now marriage is equal under the law, just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages almost 20 years ago. Just how important it was not just for the LGBT community, but for all us to see somebody so full of kindness and light—somebody we liked so much, somebody who could be our neighbor or our colleague or our sister—challenge our own assumptions, remind us that we have more in common than we realize, push our country in the direction of justice. What an incredible burden it was to bear, to risk your career like that. People don’t do that very often.”

Now , I can't relate to this at all but I still got emotional watching Ellen sobbing away and Obama holding back tears himself. If you're a part of the LGBT community, this probably holds great significance for you. She deserved this award just as much as anyone else on that stage.
Not only that but she's got great taste in watches.

Beautifully said. I don't think you have to be a part of the LGBT community to appreciate what she did. In many ways, it was similar to Rosa's refusal to give up her seat.

I'm emailing to request a show on her watches and would love it if she included John Mayer (apologies for earlier typo) and other watch enthusiasts to talk about their collections; yet I could understand if they were hesitant given theft of Orlando Bloom's collection.

Happy, happy shopping today!

Mr Tmac...

Could we please stick to the subject of timepieces ?
Without getting into other subject matters that could
be very controversial and appropriate for another
forum or blog ? Not everyone shares the same thoughts
and opinions other than the beautiful watches and or
timepieces discussed here on TRF with respect...
That said I'm sure all of us appreciate your contributions to
our fantastic forum ...

How is that being appropriate?
If you've read through this thread, you'll see that some folks were a little confused about the Medal of Freedom. I was simply trying to shed some light on the medal and the actual ceremony, which I happened to have watched.

From your quote above, I think you've made it painfully clear that not everyone shares the same thoughts and opinions.

The prejudiced among us seem to be "outing" themselves in this thread. Ironic!

Couldn't give a frig about her sexuality, she's smug and annoying,

If only everybody else thought she was as 'hilarious' as she thinks she is...
