Yes I wear my Rolex around my in laws. They are aware of nice watches, but it's not their thing and I don't think they have any idea of the values of these watches. They choose to spend their $$ on other items

Yes, they are oblivious to watches. Either way though, i'd wear it anywhere...

Mine don’t notice and aren’t really watch people. I generally wear a sub or Daytona most often and I think non-watch people notice Datejust and Day-Dates.

My mother in law gave me a hard time about wearing an expensive watch one Thanksgiving years ago, which was not a surprise, so I do understand this thread. It was an Omega at that time. My father in law heard "Omega", walked out of the room, and came back with his dad's vintage gold Omega quartz watch and gave it to me, said he'd never worn it since it was left to him and wasn't interested in watches. I thought that was a funny turn of events.

Nobody ever notices what watch I wear, and I am certain that nobody in my family could possibly care less.

The in-laws are not the problem.

My own family is….there, I probably wear a Seiko or Grand Seiko, heck even my Vacheron or so, anything but a Rolex - because I would then need to answer the stupid questions, if it’s real and how much is it? Etc.

What about your house and cars?

Everyone knows what I do for a living. Everyone has a good idea what I make. So this subject is really amusing to me.

My house is much more impressive than any Rolex I could own. Am I supposed to hide it from my in-laws and family? Should I not let them in?

It's not wearing it that is the issue...

It is when I tell those peasants to kneel down and kiss the Rolex that makes them feel inferior.

Ok I should have been a bit more precise.

For the last 16 years I live 7 hours away by plane. Before that I lived a few hours away by car. My close family parents, siblings, have all visited etc. my extended family, uncles, aunties and cousins - I see maybe every two or three years on Christmas. They never seen my houses or my cars. It’s probably a too big difference for them - I literally live in a different world for them. So the less friction the better. I just have a good time with them and all is well.

Dang, they sound like a real fun bunch to spend the holidays with

It seems like an odd reality where parents would be upset that their daughter is part of a household which is doing well financially. It is certainly not a requirement for happiness, but many studies point to money being the top cause of martial strife. And, yes, having a nice watch doesn't mean you are financially sound, but would they feel better if you had shown up with holes in your shoes, dragging the muffler of your car up their driveway?

Some of the questions put forth here are utterly ridiculous. Really? Asking a group of total strangers whether or not it's prudent to wear a watch in front of the in-laws? Come on.

I just wear them. I don’t recall any of my in-laws mentioning them.
Some of them could afford them, some couldn’t that’s okay

I do, and I love my wife's family, excluding her pencil neck lazy brother.

I have her wear her DJ and I wear my BLNR when he's around and I do enjoy rubbing it in his face.

Only him though, everyone else I am always humble to.

Now my own 84 year old father always ask for whatever watch I am wearing "what'd ya pay for that thing?" and I always answer the same, "you do not want to know, as you would have heart failure"

If anyone gives me attitude about frivolous spending on Rolex I will gladly point out that my watches are worth substantially more than I paid for them. Now I got lucky to have this turn out to my advantage, I didn’t buy them as investments, but results are results.

Absolutely. I buy them to wear them. I don't care who I'm in front of. I wear it with pride. Shouldn't bother your in-laws, it shows that you're financially secure enough to splurge on a watch. Should also be a sign that you're financially secure to take care of their daughter. As long as you're not going around saying 'here look at my Rolex.' I don't mention anything unless asked about it. I also deal with clients, so if a client sees me wearing my Rolex it should put them at ease that they're dealing with someone who is good at what they do, or at least knows what they're doing.

My MIL and FIL are fine it’s the Brother in law with the side eye action.

I don’t care in the least, but I know he’s googling basically everything material we own to assign a dollar figure to it.

We’re not in your face by any stretch either.

Oh no, they’d really feel like their daughter married down if I was wearing a lowly Rolex tool watch.

My father in law fixes luxury watches for a living, so wearing my Rolex/ Patek has been a lovely way to build our relationship
