Now this is a true worthless post.
There’s 45 pages here with many pictures, you should stop posting useless drivel.

Howdy,

Man, lately it really seems as if the nastiness of some members has increased dramatically. I really started to notice it around 6 months ago and it seems to be getting worse.

I truly hope it's an anomaly as manners and common decency are two qualities that have made this forum work for so long.

Take care,

Ruddiger

Agreed Rudd, and moderators are becoming less and less tolerant of it. Permanent bans are just several keystrokes away.

A truly amazing thread: thank you, Steve, for your posts and for sharing so much with us. It's an inspiration to read it - and makes me realise that my walking / camping in Snowdonia, the Lake District and a few other places in the UK were really gentle strolls and not quite the expeditions I imagined them to be (even if I was wearing my old 1970 Explorer at the time!).

I just read all 45 pages. Epic read, humbling stories, and a couple of hours well spent.

Makes me want to go strap on my Sub or my Polar Explorer. But I'll just add this: my Dad revered Rolex all his life but never owned one. He passed that reverence on to me. Anyway, I decided to buy my Dad a Rolex for his 85th birthday and eventually decided on an Explorer 1 as a watch that exemplified the essence of Rolex. Since the day I gave it to him it has not, as far as I know, left his wrist. He would love the story in this thread.

Thank you, Steve, for all of this.

I love the old style watches, I think in some way they are more 'Rolex'. The adverts, the history, the tool style non bling function of them. They were understated and did not pander to the trend to be too big.
And the one watch I would keep above all else is the first I bought; the Submariner.
Less is more.
Yet...
The Explorer 2 new version came out.
The quandary; white or black dial? It's important in my opinion to see these as two seperate watches; as the dials are so different. The black has a depth to it. Makes the watch seem more robust. Even though it's not..
The white is great, but the black has the nod to the original in terms of the 'phantom hands' and the original I will never get...
And in the low half light of dawn the black dial is more functional. It is also exceptionally cool..
and all the current adverts have the white dial. So again less is more.
I love expeditions, do it or a living; so it has to be an Explorer. The explorer 1 would be first, but it does not have a date; and on an expedition you need to know what day it is- or you might miss the ferry...
The Pateks are the finest made watches in the world, but you can't take a shower with one. Except the Aquanaut, but for me a a Patek needs to be on a leather strap and be made of an exotic metal.
So it has to be a Rolex.
The new explorer 2 black dial.
This watch as yet has no expedition history, but it will go to Iceland this year, on a trek never done before...and to greenland next year on a new route across the icecap....
Epic thread. Thank you for posting. I'm grateful this gets brought back up for us new members.

Love that the Explorer II ranks #1. Though I caught the bug and have a couple too many watches, the Explorer II is the most useful and would be the one and only if I had to choose.

Great thread to read and puts a few things into perspective. I have several different sought after pieces, however my Exp II polar gets the most wrist time.
