Art, that tree's very pretty. The color reminds me of a forsythia - do those grow in Florida?

How do trees know when to bloom in Florida when the seasons are Warm, Warm, Hot and Hot?

Carl... what do you know about the gemstone Labradorite? I found a cheap silver ring at an antique shop yesterday and I've really been happy with the stone. It almost looks like the old Mood Rings from the 1970s... except that it doesn't change color so dramatically. It does, however, seem to change in subtle ways depending on the lighting and angle.

Lisa, I'm afraid I had never heard of that gemstone before you posted this comment! I did a quick search online and found out its name comes from where you usually find some: the region of Labrador in Canada (right next to Quebec). Although you may find some light yellow-ish stones I will assume that, given the fact you described it as a gem with a color that changes, yours must be green/blue-ish (correct me if I'm wrong). Apparently the color changing due to light reflection is called the Schiller effect, it is due to light being reflected on very thin lamellar intergrowths inside the stone. Indeed, it seems like labradorite (just like the moonstone) is a gem made of different molecules that, rather than being "mixed", are stuck together in very thin strips, hence the fact that the color is constantly changing instead of being uniform. Here's the article in which I found most of my information, perhaps you'll be able to correct me if I misunderstood something but that's what I got from reading it.

The stone itself is probably not worth as much as a precious stone (not that there's anything wrong with that) but I think it has a very unique color. Its darkness makes it a very elegant gem for jewelry in my humble opinion but at the same time I think the Schiller effect gives it some kind of a gypsy jewel look, it's definitely my type of stone, something that mixes originality, elegance and something that is somewhat unorthodox.

May I see pictures of the ring?

Carl, I'll try to get some good pics tomorrow in the daylight. Thanks for the information!

That labradorite sphere is exquisite! How cool is that - it's from your neck of the woods.

Kind of interesting to see what 13 year olds find funny. Here're two more she has on her blog:

Apparently this is a baby elephant throwing a tantrum with its mother.

Art, your tree is looking amazing and I would love to see them bloom in person.....there will be a road trip in my future!!!

Lisa, the Trumpet trees are Native from Mexico south through Central America, the Carribean and South America. They also will grow in Southern Florida and the blooms run the color spectrum from gold/yellow through pink. They are deciduous to evergreen and bloom at the end of the dry season in their Native Habitat.....so my guess is Southern Florida where they thrive must have a dry season to trigger flowering before they leaf out.....

Take it easy.....Leo

Okay Lisa, not being raised around young ladies, as I did not have any sisters, I'm having a little difficulty wrapping my mind around what she and her friends find funny.....but I will say that the baby elephant doing a pout in the mud does strike a chord(almost looks like an alcohol fueled face plant...)!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

I'm not Carl......but I bought an old labradorite bracelet and I'm really liking that stone. Really cool how it contains all those colors but they are always changing. Tough to show in a photo, tho!

I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures Lisa! As for what your daughter has on her blog, I found the hat model and the elephant very funny!

Forsythia. That's a name that I have not heard for many years. I know what they are and have seen them many times but not around here. I don't think they grow here. Right now the citrus blossoms are out and the smell of them is very strong and amazing. So good it's indescribable. One tree can give fragrance to a large area.

I think I saw that whole clip about the baby elephant. If it's the one I was the baby was stuck in the mud of a water hole and could not get out and was about to drowned. The mother and a few other adults got in and with much effort got the baby out. It's in a clip that anti circus folks are passing around. If I recall it's a rather long clip, 10 mins or so.

Okay - here are a few pics of the ring. You're right, D - it's hard to capture the color in photos. I do like the simplicity of the ring, and it's very comfortable.

Nice ring Lisa, certainly does change colours in different light.

Any sign of your Ball watch turning up?

You know, I had a dream about it just last night. (Hopeless WIS, right?) I was at the AD, looking at all the watches and jewelry, but it seems that I kept forgetting to ask the sales guy about it.

In real life, we're looking at possibly two weeks.

Well I just looked up what it means to dream about time/watches

To see or wear a watch in your dream suggests that you need to be more carefree and spontaneous. Your life is too structured. Or you are feeling limited and constrained. Alternatively, the watch symbolizes the ticking of the human heart and thus is indicative of the emotional side of your life. The dream may also be a metaphor to indicate that you need to "watch out"

I just think it means we need to buy another watch.

Well, I ordered it several weeks ago. Since it's a new dial/case combination, I guess that's why it takes a while.

It would probably take other watch companies a few years for a special order. If they would even do one. I'm impressed with the Ball Watch Co.

Lisa, did they require a non returnable deposit on your order?

I did pay a deposit, but nothing was said about it being non refundable.

And I'm not sure it meets the criteria for a special order. I asked the guys in Switzerland (Henry, to be exact!) if they would produce a specific dial/case combo and they said they would. They will produce many, not just one. It may have already been in the works.
