I've had a Platty too, but don't anymore. It's a wonderful watch, but it looks perfect brand new, in my use it get's scratches fast, and while a Sub with scratches brings street cred, a platty with scratches looks... scratched. Did that make any sense?

It's just me envy talk.

Which portion of the watch gets scratched easily?

This has been my experience as well!

Would Rolex make the Blue dial available - you think? I am guessing probably not...

Thanks,
I think you could customize the watch any way you wanted- ( unless I interpreted the info wrong)- check out Jocke's postings on his YM...

I found that the more recent YM dials are "flat"looking- the older dials have an unrivalled sandblasted sparkle! LOVE it!

I wear my YM everywhere- at the barn around horses where it gets positively filthy..., swimming in lakes, where its exposed to sand....during my fitness where it gets all icky-sweaty...I'm finding the plat. dial's finish to be holding up exceptionally well; I clean it daily with a soft toothbrush and dish soap, and the high polish/brushed finish is still great-(which surprises me as I was expecting the brushed-matte finish to wear off quickly)

Anyway fellas, diversity in opinions are a good thing- keeps the world turning 'round !

Sorry to be a Philistine here, but does anyone have any experience with how these YM's hold their value at trade time?

From what I've seen, the YM value has a huge drop off in value from MSRP on the used market... which is what makes buying a mint pre-owned one such a great deal. I think MSRP is around $11-12k (although AD will give you a decent discount on them) vs a mint pre-owned one can probably be had for 6-8k depending on serial number.

The fact of the matter is it's one of the least popular sports models because it is up against the extremely popular Submariners, GMT Masters IIs and Daytonas.

Also, many enthusiasts dislike this watch because it's not really a "tool" watch when compared to the others, even though probably close to 98% of Rolex wearers don't use their watch as tool watches nor did they buy them for that reason, they just lie and say they do ;)

Let's face it, we don't need to spend 8k on a "tool" watch that we can go diving with on our tropical vacation, or on a watch that keeps a second time zone for us. We spent 8k on the watch because it is a stunning piece of work. That is why I bought the Yacht-Master.

if bought brand new, expect it to depreciate 20-30% as soon as the stickers are removed...

Is this % more than a Sub or GMT II?

No real problem with my YM. purchased used 5500 and expect if i ever sell to get pretty close to such price. mine is only a weekend wearer. its a beautiful watch that wears with jeans or suit. its a stunner at the coffee machine at wawa.

just a little bling.

iv also got my eye on the blue YM....

anything that is bought brand new depreciates, also sub cs and gmt cs

but those prices will recover a lot quicker than a ym's

buy a ym at full retail today and it'll be 2-3 years before the secondary market prices catch up with today's retail

i'm a huge ym fan, previous owner, and i follow it closely...

I think it depends on the market. I know of a place that buys any Rolex at 85% value. Incidentally, the same place only offers 80% on AP's. This is in HongKong. In the Philippines, it's more or less the same. I'm thinking that's how it is in Singapore and Thailand as well.

However, the newer YM's may not hold value as well simply because they have virtually no differences compared to the older models. I mean, I have a 1999 model 16622 and it's 95% the same as the 2011 version. So, if you were to put them side by side, you probably can't tell them apart - unless you were really savvy. So, if in 1999, the YM cost $5,000 (let's say), and the 2011 model costs $8,000, in the used market, both would have more or less the same value - slight increase to the newer one just because of less wear and tear.

The new YM will probably hold value better because it's got enough differences and upgrades to differentiate it.

I used to own one, so I guess I can comment. My fascination started seeing one in the wild on a domestic flight. It was (is) amazing! I spent the whole flight trying to sneak glances at it-did not want to offend or alarm the owner. Got one shortly thereafter, but flipped it when I was doing some needed thinning of the herd. Watching the new blue one with some interest...maybe...

The plat blends in well and looks great, for me, those are positives.....not that people notice others anyway.

Love the watch

And have owned the SS/Plat version three different times. However, something always comes along that I sell the watch for. The biggest issue for me i think is it doesn't really fit my lifestyle like a Sub or SD does.
Maybe I will get another some day.

Two tone midsize blue dial YM was my frist watch. I stilll have and wear it on occasions. It is on my avatar. People compliment me for buying this watch.

Indeed this is the only watch my wife considers as a 'Rolex' watch. My SS Daytona has not impressed her one bit. Though she likes the two tone GMT IIc which I bought last year, she no longer says anything nice for the fear of I going and buying yet another Rolex. Period.

Amazing pics fellas!!
I'm thinking of elevating my YM to "grail-watch" status by ( someday )exchanging the SS bracelet for a platinum one... any thoughts?
