I would love if it would go back the way it was four or five years ago when there were watches to buy in the ADs cases. Back then it was still a luxury item and exclusive but those with the financial means were able to pick up a nice watch. What’s going on today its flavor ridiculous. It has turned me off completely and made me turn to other brands for future purchases

Its a fine balance. I agree with above that I would like it to go back to where it was when it just held MSRP or slightly lower (usually 10-20%). The value would only go up on certain models/discontinued pieces. I still bought watches back then and honestly enjoyed them more.

Part of the fun is the wait and the chase. But the ends of obtaining a particular piece at retail for a collection is the ultimate reward. I'd probably buy more pieces on a predictable schedule if they were readily available.

It's availability would make me buy more if I have the funds, my interest is not based on it's scarcity.

People want what they can't have. What makes something "exclusive" is that people are excluded from having it. I have loved Rolex and Patek since I'm in my 20s but the fact that it's an expensive, hard to get item that increases in value the moment you buy it has been the motivation to own many pieces instead of just one and wear it every day (as I did for some time)

I loved them and bought them before the hype but I’m done with the BS and AD games.

I’d buy more. A lot more. But since I can’t I spend my money on other stupid stuff, like a fancy new fridge. Rolex’s loss is Sub-Zero’s gain.

No, I'd prefer to be able to buy them at retail with reasonable availability. Right now, the AD situation kind of sucks, especially for a lot of people who have probably wanted a Rolex for many years and finally can purchase one.

For that matter, I wish used models depreciated as is the case with other brands.

Rolex will still be Rolex even if availability gets better, except perhaps to the people who are most concerned about using them as an investment or a store of value.

…no. back in 2005, I walked into an AD and bought a kermit (they had two for sale).

I think the “lack” of availability actually diminishes my interest in rolex.

For me, I prefer instant gratification when it comes to buying luxurious items. Almost everything else in my life has been about delayed gratification, diligent research and patiently waiting (school, children, investment etc). So it’s nice to be able to make a quick purchase and enjoy it while I can.

I probably would. As amazing as they look, the difficulty to get certain pieces is a big part of the attraction for me. I get bored with instant gratification.

I lived it ten plus years ago. The only watch that was hard to get was Daytona SS and 116LV. EVERYTHING else was just like an omega boutique today.

There are guys on here who spend ALOT of time flexing their red, yellow and turquoise watches which have nothing going for them except their scarcity. So the answer is definitely a yes.

There is a happy medium. Obtainable at the AD (even if I have to order and wait a month) is fine. But when they became essentially unobtainable at an AD and the crazy second-hand prices (and conspicuous—it’s getting more dangerous to wear them and they carry more baggage than ever) I was out. It’s all hype machine, easy crypto money now.

No, but the desire to own one is at an all time low. Just has nothing to do with exclusivity.

I’ve been waiting for 17 months cumulatively across 2 ADs for an Explorer 2 or Root Beer. I enjoy seeing everyone else on this forums land new pieces but I’ve mostly lost the desire for Rolex. If it happens, great, if not, c'est la vie.

Saying that the Rolex shortage has allowed me to become a VC owner and also be so much more grateful for what I do have.

No; I wouldn't lose interest if I could purchase at MSRP from an AD without an interminable delay.

To be honest, a little bit. For instance, I would want to reach a Panda anyway because I do really love that fucking watch. However, I would likely loose some interest in other models in favor to other companies.

For me, the things that I wear every day, especially a car, a motorbike or a watch, are the ones that I consider they “define” me, from a certain point of view, and all of those features go further from its appearance. Exclusivity is one of them, obviously within what I can afford.

Desire is another highlighted factor and that is part of the game and essence.

No I’d have more interest actually if less of the games. Time is money as they say and I don’t have any interest in chasing purchases. Rolex is in the manufactured demand mindset right now. That’s an indicator historically of a late cycle stock market rally. Patience will be rewarded imo if one can hold off. Especially with currency valuations returning upwards (at some point). Wealthy look to hard assets in times of late cycles (at least historically). It’s a shame we have to deal with this rather than Rolex just raising MRSPs to market equilibrium.

if they were easy to buy i'd spend way too much on watches.
the excitement of scoring a desired piece is off the charts for me

Best era was when Rolex kept it value and appreciated over time .
It was more fun to wear .

Wearers are the loved one's.
Cupboard queens are just wads of cash .

Rolex became a flex in the modern day. While I do enjoy modern Rolex...I do not like the flex culture that has become associated with it. I would much rather go back to the days where the watch retained 80% of it's value but you could buy it. It was still an achievement to buy what you wanted without the perceived notion of it being an investment.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There are watches that are investments, but I do not think that mass produced watches will be one of those. Vintage Rolex, there is a reason for them being investments. Modern Rolexes are a-plenty. They are just not able to be obtained easily for retail.
