Just picked one up with the WG numerals! So excited as it is my first Rolex. I'm so glad that Rolex released a Mark 2 and the Mark 1 will become rarer and rarer. Historically shorter released Rolexs tend to go up in price and the WG numerals are gorgeous!

I go back and forth on the Explorer but if I wanted one I'd be trying to buy it now because for me the previous 214270 beats the 2016 one any day. The hand difference is barely noticeable. The decision to remove the white gold numerals was a really bad one though and if I had to choose I would happily take the shorter hands in exchange for the white gold.

Wonder if I can get a deal from an AD.

The “disappearing” numbers on MK 1 are part of the charm.

The MK 1 is a changeling, it has different looks depending on the lighting. The MK 2 doesn’t do that - it is what it is

The MK 1 is going to be a big collectors must-have some day, guaranteed

Go to an independent watchmaker with Rolex parts account for service. Want to keep it all original. This certainly will be a collectors piece in the future. I picked one up last year. They are getting harder to find

I had my Mk1 turned into a MkII at my AD about a year and a half ago, did not require a service to do it but it did cost about $800 CAD. They changed the dial and hands; you can't do one without the other (dial and hands are one upgrade kit, Rolex requests the replaced parts be returned to the factory).

I have never heard of Rolex doing this replacement to any other reference. When they started replacing the hands and dial was there ever any explanation given as to why they started doing this?

Can the short minute hand be explained? The only short hand I see is the hour one....so not sure on this one? Thanks

Compare a face shot of Mark 1 versus a face shot with Mark 2. You’ll see the minute hand on the ladder doesn’t quite get to the length over the markers

I adore my mk I. I just prefer the white gold numerals. I find the sportiness of the lumed numerals inelegant for my personal preference.

Interestingly, the newer fully-lumed 214270 was in production for fewer years (2016-21) than the WG 3-6-9 version (2010-2016).

I wonder which version sold more units?

Now that you remind me of this Ghost thread from 3 years ago, and I was post 199 three years ago just above this, I got rid of my mark one not because I hated the short hands, but because I hated to know loom numerals. I upgrade it to mark two to an absolutely love it. No idea on the number of units sold
