Any business that takes in money prior to the goods bought being shipped is subject to going upside down if the owner doesn’t manage cash flow very carefully. And once in trouble I imagine the temptation to get sketchy can be near overwhelming. I have seen it happen in the custom wheel business and in the wine business. A famous wine store in NorCal ended up going upside down owing customers $70 million US. Sold Bordeaux futures for years taking the money and covering the orders by buying when the vintage was released. This worked until it didn’t.

2.5 months because he had to wait for the watch and boxes to arrive from China, probably…

Jesus. What a disaster all around for the buyers. I can’t buy that a seller wouldn’t know they were handling a fake. Like, no. Come on.

Yes indeed, I once listed a NOS coke for sale and instantly the clown Chris PM-Ed me threatening me to post with evidence that I own the watch or the post will be taken down. He then criticised the list price and told me good luck with sale . Of course it’s good luck you crook! Something you obviously need to scam others in order to purchase .

This clown could also never accept any funny banter on the forums and took everything with criticism.

I hope a**holes like these get caught and better yet have legal action taken against them. You’re a shame to all Aussies!

Was the movement not verified upon receipt? Opening the caseback to verify a genuine movement would be step one on any Rolex purchase, and takes one minute. This is far and away the first thing all of you should be doing.. and remember there is no free spring balance on any Chinese clone movement.

I'll never understand the fear of unscrewing a caseback (a truly failproof endeavor) when 10's of thousands of dollars are in play... Then again I'm a watchsmith, so..

Whilst this is true for 31xx based clones, this isn’t the case with the 4130. They will take genuine parts. There are a few of these cloned 4130 movements about with a genuine 4130 balance assembly/pallet fork/escape wheel. A free sprung balance isn’t the way to authenticate these movements.

Don't know him, but come on...

... a guy who has a video of spotting a fake and busts himself as a watch aficionado sells such a fake without recognising it? Either his youtube presence is a complete scam or he was deliberately selling a replica. Either way, he deserves to be outed.

Sounds to me like a Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme. Nick is involved, probably the entire admin. Anyone that posts a defense is either dumber than dumb, or part of this scheme.

I’m all aboard the anti-HH bandwagon, but to be fair, it’s a rule of the group to post a pic with your name and date on it to prove you own the watch. It’s enforced widely even to long term sellers and for good reason.

The seller admitted it was fake after inspecting it once returned ro him in a response post on the group he used to moderate but is still a member of when rules state it's a bannable offence.

I can't post a bunch of pictures etc and my thoughts as I have Low Post Count, Can't post pictures and Comments require mod approval.

The admins refuse to ban Chris from the Facebook Buyers/Sellers group.
This is despite Chris and the admin team banning people for far far less things than selling fake watches.

Their excuse is that Chris already stepped down as Admin so no need to ban him.

I don’t think this is fair.. look at my previous posts and you’ll see I 100% think Chris is a POS and culpable.

But Nick hasn’t done anything here besides (unwisely) defending his friend.

Nick has a very good reputation as a seller and sells plenty of watches through the group himself and no one is suggesting there were any issues with his transactions

I would like to share similar experience with Chris Essery. The only thing I will post on this thread is fact and you can decide for yourself.
I have purchased a 2018 Rolex GMT from him on 3th Sep 2019.
- 3th Sep 2019 $16000 was sent to him, I asked him to post it to me on 20th Sep as I was oversea.
- 23rd Sep, he claimed he sent the watch on this day, and he is oversea.
- 29th Sep, he provided the tracking code, which does not work.
- 1st Oct, He said he is in London and he is going to call the post office to investigate
- 4th Oct, he said he is in Singapore with flight delays
- 6th Oct, he said he cant find the receipt and he is going to claim it on his insurance
- 14th Oct, he said police report has been submitted
- 23rd Oct, he said the insurance company told him it will take two weeks to process the claim
- 6th Nov, “insurance company is still investigating”
- 12th Nov, He said he is going to list a back Daytona for sale and he is going to refund me first once he sell ( I suspect this is the one Shohaib bought)
- 17th Nov, he sold the Daytona but refuse to refund me the fund as “it was a trade, not cash sell”
- 20th Nov, he said he is expecting outcome from “insurance claim” tomorrow
- 3rd Dec, he said he is waiting for the claim money to hit account and he is going to transfer me $8k on the same day. ($8k transfer did not happen)
- 6th Dec, he said two lot of $5.5k was sent to me. (in fact only one lot of $5.5k was received)
- 13rd Dec, he said he is travelling again and asked me to contact him on Whatsapp.
- 13rd Dec, he said he has got another Sea Dweller that he can sell to me for $19k.
- 18th Dec, he said he is in NSW to help friend with bushfire, and will send the rest of the money to me today. ($10500)
- 20th Dec, $5000 refund received. (still $5500 outstanding)
- 20th Dec – 13th Jan, I have sent him 8 message on 5 different days and he has not replied any of the message
- 13th Jan, he sent me a photo showing a house on fire and claimed it to be his parents house and the reason for not reply my message is he is helping them out. He said he will send the rest of the fund first thing in the morning (that did not happen)
- 13th Jan, he said he will sent me a rolex wallet for the troubles (never received)
- 15th Jan, he will send me the fund tomorrow. (didn’t happen again)
- 18th Jan, received $2000 refund (still $3500 outstanding) he said the rest of fund is sending from oversea, and it could up to 5 days to arrive.
- 24th Jan, received $3275.41 refund ($224.59 outstanding), interestingly the fund is from an normal domestic transfer, not an international transfer.
- 25th Jan, received the rest of fund.
- 31st Jan, Chris called me and asked me to keep it confidential.

Like I have said, I have only posted fact in this thread. And all chat history are on my phone.
I have been an very stressful 4.5 months trying to deal with this drama.
Sellers like this are usually running a "Ponzi"-like scheme. They sell pieces to pay back buyers for having busted their sh--.

If I were Chris, I'd come clean to you about this story and admit which of those events were fake- because if any government agency decided to investigate and found forged documents, he could land in a lot of hot water. And I don't mean the Australian coast (sorry, had to).

That may be, but I'd be wary of his character. There's a link in this thread to an article saying that he had previously been convicted for insider trading. If that's true, that speaks quite poorly about his ethical standard, especially considering he was a public account at the time he was caught.

We sincerely thank you for saving those WhatsApp messages- it's currently the crux of your evidence, and until more people come out with damning evidence against him, it's basically the only documented proof.

I would like to add, though- and please don't take this the wrong way- but if you keep repeating "this guy is guilty" and "this guy is a fraud" ad nauseum, people will eventually begin to question your intentions and wonder if you're up to some sort of psychological conditioning/reinforcement, and maybe even erode your case. Let the evidence speak for itself- anyone who's read the WhatsApp thread can see Chris f**ked up big time, and at the very least, see his disingenuity. Which brings us to this:

Although I was surprised, to save any further delay for the buyer, we worked through an agreement for the watch and funds to be returned. Upon the arrival of the watch back to me, I issued the funds back to the buyer. I would not issue a full refund until the watch was back with me.

I have inspected the watch that the buyer returned and it is a fake.

Chris, if you're reading this, please understand that very few people- if any- believe it. Your half-assed apology sounds more like a calculated way to save face, and raises more questions than it answers.

Oh well nothing like excuses when selling a $30K watch, yeah there's just so many other things to tidy up before sending off
I want to say "never underestimate the power of the mail to delay your shipment," but seeing that he took forever to ship, that point is moot. If he couldn't ship a watch within a week, he should have, at the very least, been transparent about what the f*** was happening.

At this point, we know that (1) he sold a fake, and (2) he acted ridiculously unprofessionally. We have pretty good reason- pretty strong, really- to suspect he knowingly sold a fake. The only fathomable situations that suggest he didn't knowingly sell a fake would have required him to speak up by now- and would contradict his response above.

For example, it's possible he got the Daytona in a trade and shipped it to OP as soon as he received it- but in this case, he didn't (1) verify its authenticity, a cardinal sin while dealing with a $25-$30K watch, and (2) lie about it being in his "collection."

The question in bold is the question that the community (and maybe even authorities) need to answer. If it's true this is systematic, then... oof. I pity the fool who thinks this will go away anytime soon.

Is/has anyone reported this to Australian authorities? How about reporting them to Facebook? If they are running a fraudulent business someone should take a look.

For all waiting to hear his side here it is. And he admits it’s a fake he sold out of his “personal” collection. No one should ever buy a watch from him again. Sorry to the OP and his friend who bought the watch. I would make a YouTube video about your experience. Thank you for trying to help out others not get scammed. And for giving a heads up to those who might have been scammed. If anyone bought a watch with him it needs to be checked ASAP. From the sounds of him walking away I doubt he will issue any more refunds. What’s the point his reputation is tarnished and I’m sure he doesn’t have the liquidity to refund all those he has scammed. Makes me sick to my stomach.

I created a TRF account just to read the WhatsApp messages and boy was it worth it. I had an open mind about this, but after reading everything I think it's pretty likely that he sold it knowing it was a fake.

However, the absolute lowest point of this whole ordeal was seeing him use the bushfires as an excuse. That made me sick to my stomach.

A really important point I'd like to make, especially to the reddit crowd.

Refer to the original post:

Other macro shots of the fake vs real. Scariest part is you couldn't see any of this from the naked eye.
I don't know if this is Watchfinder's fault, the general internet's fault, TRF's fault, or whatever- but somewhere along the way, it became an accepted position to (1) not take a loupe to your Rolex, and (2) accept the notion that Rolex's quality control/QC is subpar.

If macro shots of this watch were put on r/rolex, or even here, unfortunately, we all know that an army of people would pipe up "you can't expect a perfect watch" or "you shouldn't be so nitpicky." I'm pretty sure I can even name the users who would say such nonsense. Only in the context of a scam are people quick to point out these minute discrepancies.

Well, you should expect a perfect watch. And if you see a discrepancy, you should investigate it with the same watch from other reputable dealers or members who've purchased the watch from an AD. Rolex has been known to intentionally make extremely subtle asymmetries as a counterfeit protection; in cases like this, though, it's true across most, if not all, Rolexes- and a simple query on TRF would show as much. From there, you can quickly figure out the character behind the seller, and whether or not there's a scam many of us should be privy to.

As for Rolex's quality control? I've yet to see an authoritative industry expert- even outside of Rolex SA itself and its affiliates/authorized retailers- that wouldn't call it top of the line, at least in the modern age, where computers assist humans (and vice versa). If you've purchased something from an AD and it's not right, then you ask for it to be right, and the AD is legally obliged to fix it for you. Keeping the record straight helps us in situations like these.

Is there a better way to read the WhatsApp logs? Any recommended program to open it in? When it opens for me it's a mess.
