Being realistic, have prices ever stabilised or increased during Dec/Jan? I always thought the time for that was March when the discontinuation rumours begin. I still remember Paul Twirp saying batman's were on their way out hahaha

Could be price rise related. I was going to sell something last week but saw a price rise confirmation (in writing) so will hold off. Can't remember if it was Jan or Feb (I know Patek is 4% avg in UK at the at the start of Feb) but should be an extra 4-7% for doing nothing. Why not eh?

26715ST blue dial mint 2022 full set - went for $37.2k

That’s MSRP + tax. This is huge, particularly since auctions are high watermarks.

2023 will be a great year for collectors.

I haven’t before and won’t start now buying watches to flip or with the sole focus of making money/resale values etc. but I have a tricky choice now as the only piece I want (that’s viable) is the explorer 2 black dial

I expect to get offered one in Q1 23 but the big question now is do I wait until the end of the year and see if they potentially drop below retail, also due to the nature of the watch if I can get a good full set example that’s 2-3 years old with a good saving it might be a better option at present.

Explorer II always a bit of a black sheep. Always used to be the one available when there were no Subs and GMTs on offer. I like it but I have a GMT and prefer to fill the gap with something else. I think this version is much better than the one in the 90s that looked liked a GMT with only the bezel swap. The orange on the hand and dial was a great move.

In other words, tough call.

I do think now is a great time to buy MSRP in stock sport watches for the long term if you can get any offered that you like.

Good logic thanks for the post, I think I’ll bite the bullet and get it when offered.

It’s the only Rolex I’m interested in other than a 36mm yellow gold daydate which I won’t be buying for a while yet, so it’ll be good to get and then I’ll purchasing a few non rolex watches for my collection.

No this was just a 5 digit Sea Dweller.

He ended up lowering it to 7100 shipped because "I'm drunk its Xmas eve" and that apparently got it sold.

One of those flippers operating off 100-200 dollar margins I think.

It’s officially Christmas. No semblance of prices rebounding or stabilizing. All you hear is crickets from the bulls.

Hope all the flippers, charlatans, and predatory influencers get coal. I’m sure they will in 2023.

Prices are going to continue to go down on secondary market. We have more rate hikes coming and taxes are due shortly. Jan and Feb are always notorious dead months for watch market. Nothing happening right now points to watch market recovering it’s all delusional wishcasting.

I saw that auction, I was surprised that went that low. That watch will ship from Hong Kong to the US buyer. Do the buyer need to pay any duty fee, import tax or any sale tax to the US?

Anybody has any experience about purchasing an item from overseas?

Thanks in advance for information.

Generally when the seller is an established dealer and provides the label they cover the customs fee.

Even if technically we are now in a recession, the job market is still very hot.

When it breaks in S1 or S2, it will get even more interesting for collectors.

Hilarious! Nothing like pulling down 100 large ($100.00) after a lot time screwing with it.

I guess there are barely import duties in the US then. Do this in Europe and you would look at 2k for a 10k watch.

Interestingly enough CRM is one of those that keeps it relatively straight (of course slight bias they want you to buy). They are having somewhat of a fire sale in their private group chat, and the desperation is pretty clear. Meteorite white gold Daytona $45k for example.

The best is WatchEric. Really a straight shooter with no BS. Only “influencer” that I’m a fan of.

I hope 16710s go below 10k again and 4 and 5 digit DDs from the 90s back/close to 13k. I don't see those getting crushed too hard even though everything else is moving down.

I'm no expert but I believe some states would have sales tax due and others may not have sales tax but have "use tax", which would effectively be the same thing.

In the UK you would be looking at having to pay VAT which is 20% (again, to my understanding but I am not an accountant, lawyer or tax expert).

In the US if a store is in a different state and ships something to you across state lines you generally don’t pay sales tax. However if that store has operations in your state stores do collect sales tax. Also pretty much all the huge online sellers like eBay, Chrono24 etc will charge sales tax on all US sales at this point. I would definitely confirm with the seller who is paying the customs fee though before agreeing to buy.

And yeah customs fees in the us are very complicated but aren’t that high. Probably a few hundred dollars on a 10k watch. Precious metal watches have higher customs fees though I think.

I think the HK/Dubai sellers on Moda are making a lot of money right now buying Asian watches for way less than you could source them for in the US which still has a relatively much stronger economy. Then they can still undercut all the US sellers even after paying shipping and Customs.

Thanks again!

Yes, most of the good price sellers are from HK/Dubai, when buying from a foreign countries I am still worry about unknown expenses that can occur later.

My experience of the US is a good 4 years old now so I may be able it if touch - and can vary between States of course). Sales tax for ourlt of State was generally not collected by the seller but I don't think that technically means it was not "due" from the buyer. I bought watches out of State while living in NY and while didn't pay sales tax as you describe I was hit with "use taxes" which worked out about the same.

YMMV obviously
