I'm comfortable taking a nice watch anywhere I'm willing to take myself (and my family).

Should be the ultimatum in these ‘Is is safe wearing my watch in....’ type threads.

I really don’t understand why people value the safety of their watch over their own lives or families. If you don’t think it’s safe to bring your watch, why on earth would you feel comfortable being in that place?

Dumb thing to say. It's not even close.

They’ll steal your iPhone and Swatch as much as a Rolex in the wrong places. Don’t go to the wrong places, and I think this is key, have trusted locals with you that know where not to go and who can cut off any hustles.

Sometimes you never know if you’re in a safe spot. We had just boarded a train in Brussels last year and a young guy who was milling about grabbed a lap top bag from a middle aged lady traveler. He sadly had messed with the wrong lady, obviously schooled in self defense or martial arts, she ran him down and gave him quite the beat down until security could rescue him.

This is true, and at the same time things like this can easily happen right where you live... bad guys will watch your routine your habits etc. I'd argue you're just as likely to have a problem close to home as you are traveling.

Obviously common sense and awareness of your surroundings wherever you are is important

Maybe we are all better off just selling our watches

Absolutely correct. Can you imagine people traveling to the US from Mexico City or Barcelona saying how dangerous it is to wear your Rolex in Chicago or St Louis? Common sense is absolutely your best weapon. After witnessing the instant grab on the lady’s lap top case, we sort of tightened up our own bags etc but I feel like we were better prepared in the first place. We didn’t have things on us like an obvious lap top case which the thieves are apparently watching for.

Insurance, common sense, wear your Rolex. Mexicans wear theirs. It's about where you go, alone or in company of others? True of Cairo, Bangkok, Delhi, Point Noir, Chicago, LA, NYC.

BTW, a 43 year old who owned a successful restaurant and bar in a fun part of town where we live passed away yesterday from Covid19. I guess being at his restaurant and being exposed indoors got him...He fought for 15 days but didn't make it...Horrible!!

Isn't this why 'beaters' exist?

I don't necessarily care about losing a good watch per se, they are all insured - but I do care about becoming a 'target' simply due to wearing a high value trinket.

I don't even wear pricey watches in England anymore, not worth the hassle.

If you have it insured and the hotel has a safe to put it in, you should be fine.

Since all my rolexes are so versatile, and I'm always wearing one, I totally welcome any excuse to wear my beaters. This would be a good excuse.

I travel all over the world and usually don't bring any expensive watches. Maybe an Omega PO on occasion but I have a trusty TAG that I've had for decades that's my go to. As a photographer I'm always scrambling up boulders or walls or anything to get a unique advantage. Having any of my Rolex's on would just cause me way too much worry.

I also don't like drawing attention to myself in the cities. I tend to dress down and generally blend in. I just feel more comfortable that way but that's just me. Your milage may vary. I am not a resort kind of guy, more a B&B so...

BTW, where ever you go, just don't be this guy! I took this in front of Notre Dame a few years back. The quintessential tourist!
