July learned my SS Sub is being serviced at Rolex in Philly instead of NYC...
Anybody had a watch serviced in Philly? Is there any difference? I spoke to Rolex in NYC today and they informed me that they had service centers in Dallas, Philly and NYC and that my watch was actually in Philly...
I had it packaged and sent from the local Ben Bridge to Rolex NYC. And now I learn it is in Philly. Rolex said that this happens when you send your watch through a dealer... when you send it yourself it goes to nyc. When you send it through a dealer it goes to Dallas or Philly. What's up with this? |

It's in Lititz, where the Technicum is also located (the rolex-sponsored watch school). Since other RSC's like Beverly Hills were closed, the demand must have forced Rolex to open another RSC: makes sense to do it near their school. Maybe that's where the new graduates intern?

Nooooo
This is the worst possible response I could have gotten... I almost want to demand that they send it to NY to re-service now. This is where I was promised it would go. |

It won't matter--it is good for the interns to learn on nice watches--it gives them practice and they can learn from their mistakes--look at it as an almost charitable act on your part.

Did they give you an address for the Phila RSC? Never knew of one here. Interested to see if they do walk ins/drop offs.

... yeah it was supposed to say 'JUST learned...'
Can anybody else verify this about the school in Pennsylvania? Really, really a bummer. It's my Dad's vintage sub that has never been for service. The whole thing is just making me nervous. I've never been the kind of consumer to make a stink, but I really had no idea that if I sent it to Rolex NYC it could end up in Philly or Dallas... Oddly enough though, if I phone Rolex NYC WITH a Rolex area code they have all the info handy about my watch. So confused... |

Interns or graduates do NOT work on a customers watch at the Lititz service center...
The Technicum is there, and they do train future watchmakers for Rolex and other brands too.. Rolex Corporate funds and sponsors the school and instructors.. But the Service Center is only co-located and they are journeyman watchmakerws there as well as top of the line tooling.. I think that it might be a better place since they are actually Watchmakers ttaking care of your watch... At the RSC your watch is handled most of the way by technicians and only sees a watchmaker as the last step...

I talked with an AD a couple of weeks ago in New Mexico and they told me they send to Philly instead of Dallas. They like the service they recieve.

I agree, it's probably a better place. My 2003 model GMTII took TWO trips to RSC in NYC to get right, so don't think NYC is the end all/be all.
The latest service done on the same watch was with the watchmaker at a local AD; was done faster, and I could see his workspace through the glass wall, and got to look at a 1930's ladies cocktail Rolex movement he was working on. A much better experience for sure! :)

I don't think you have anything to worry about: RSC service is typically top notch, wherever it is rendered. Since they reorganized their service centers, I assume they send work to whichever RSC is light on work. They all have the same high standards.

What is happening has happened before. Rolex hoards their parts and only sell to a very few independent watchmakers so most cannot get genuine Rolex parts. Most Rolex owners want Rolex parts so Rolex gets more work than they can handle.
I'm sure that doesn't compromise a quality job. |

You support some kid to learn on repairing a Rolex at $600.00??? Are you mad? I would feel misled as the poster of this thread seems to feel. I would be. As a side note, I do not think NY is the place to send watches for service. I would use Dallas only. But just my opinion.

...well the way Dallas RSC handled my father's sub was not what I call stellar and I was not even there for a service. How old is your dad's watch? They may end up just sending it back to you saying it is to old anyway.

I have heard 30 years is the cut off so 1980 and newer or Rolex will tell you to buy a new watch. If it doesn't need parts or if parts are available there are thousands of watchmakers that can do as good or better than Rolex. If one can live with aftermarket parts the watch can be kept running indefinitely; Rolex doesn't want that.

... actually my quote is around $1300 including service, hands, dial and lens. It is a 1984, so not super old. Nice to know about Dallas now (albeit a bit too late).
