New Profession

I have been doing my job for 18 years or so...I am a professional but am getting a bit tired and losing my enthusiasm for the job. I am really not skilled for anything else...I have a mortgage and debt but I am itching to try something else

Has anyone else been in this situation and what did you decide to do...

Go spartan and pay down your debt so it'll make it easier to take a lower paying job to start that you will enjoy.

Yeah, I've read his stuff, it's worked well for us so far, and we don't go spartan, we just got a handle on where all the money was going each month (ie, out the window).

A great friend of mine is a general surgeon and is in the same situation as Joe. He tolerates his job, but has lost the love for medicine and surgery....He is looking for an alternative career.

Joe, I made a switch from being a Pilot (Navy trained) to going back to my degree which was in Engineering. Keep in mind, I had been in the service for over 12 years, so I might as well been fresh out of college. Everyone I ever talked to said things like: "Why don't you go fly for the airlines? How can you not want to keep flying!?" etc. Let me say, the most energy I spent in the early days of the transition was having to explain myself. Now, there were some extenuating circumstances I won't go in to, but I really had lost my love of flying, it just happens. So here is my advice: Follow your soul, if you are not happy with your medical career (or whatever you are doing) then do whatever is necessary to make the change, it will not be easy, but you WILL be happier in the long run. And most important, DON'T FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN YOURSELF to every Tom, Dick and Harry that want to understand why you are leaving a profession many people aspire to attain. If you're happier with life working at a Starbucks then I say GO FOR IT, more power to you and don't waste energy worrying about what other people think. Good luck my friend! Let us know where you end up! Or, maybe you'll be serving me my Late this afternoon, I like extra foam..

Just make sure you are well capitalized. #1 reason for start-ups going out, not enough back-up cash or credit!

While you decide you should see if you can do some of your courses extramurally.

Good luck.

Absolutely go spartan, scrimp and save, etc. Them you'll have the financial confidence to try something else.

I'm on my third completely different type of work (I'm 45); found what I like and sticking with it!
