So while in Monterey took some pics and the Rolex shop here is insane! Literally cases of watches to choose from. Also a mini museum in this store.

Thanks Hydromaroc! Just did it! Those are some HUGE,HUGE homes! One Butler's quarter or in-law home was over 3000sq ft!. That's as big as my home. I saw one that was like 10,000 sq ft! Imagine the heating bill for that!?!?!? Anyhow, very nice homes. Good for those people that they made it. But the beach part of the drive was very, very, smelly. Otherwise a beautiful drive.

I was stationed at the Presidio for three months in 1968 studying Vietnamese at the Defense Language Institute.

I was only drawing $43 a month, because I took three months advance pay before taking leave after getting orders to Vietnam and because the Army administered the base, we were paid once per month, instead of twice per month as the Marine Corps and the Navy do it.

The idea was that I'd go straight to Vietnam, where you won't miss the money and pay it back over six months. Instead, I was sent to Monterey first.

Still, it was a great place to be stationed and I had a great time anyway.

I've never seen so many Porsche 911s in my life as I saw there in those three months. They were as thick as flies.

The Presidio is a nice place to visit, if the security hasn't been tightened. In my day, it was pretty much wide open.

When I was there, there wasn't much action on Cannery Row, but I had to go there anyway to pay homage to John Steinbeck.

The purported first brick building in California is there near the base and is a museum.

The sea lions used to get up on the breakwater there by the Coast Guard station and make quite a ruckus, but I've heard that for some reason not as many go there anymore. It might still be worth checking out.

Generally, Monterey is just a beautiful little town and some of my buddies and I used to just walk around the residential areas, because every neighborhood is interesting to look at.

The weather is pretty good, too. I was there from June through August and Winter Greens were the uniform of the day.

For some reason, my neck is hurting.

That's a great, GREAT story. Thank you for your service to this country! My first wife graduated from there in 88 I believe & studied Russian. She told me of how brutally mental that course was and the mind games the instructor would play. At the time I was trying out for pararescue and getting ready to go to Sheppard but where she was to be stationed and my next assignment didn't match up so something had to give. I droped the Jolly Green and opted to be assigned with her at "Korea". Weird place for Russian if you ask me but, ok.
Anyhow, Stienbeck is alive & well here. I see flags of him depicted on the lightpost. Although I'm afraid he my soon be relegated to history for this next generation.

Yours is an interesting story, too. Most courses at DLIWC are pretty long, but we Marines were treated to what was called a contract course in South Vietnamese dialect, whereas the main course was North Vietnamese dialect.

It was mostly military-related stuff and some social stuff and of course some obligatory profanities. It was intense, I have to admit, though probably not as intense as your former wife's course.

Russia isn't far from Korea, so maybe that's not such a strange place after all.
